Prince William booed by soccer fans at FA Cup final
Prince William is the president of the Football Association. As such, the Duke of Cambridge attended the FA Cup final on May 14.
In this match, Chelsea played Liverpool, and the latter's fans were clearly heard booing the Duke before kickoff. They also booed the British national anthem (titled "God Save the Queen"). [The reaction to this booing was mixed, to say the least. According to The Independent, there are those who clearly commend the Liverpool fans for standing up for their principles and those who clearly condemn their actions, including a series of British politicians.
By way of background, Liverpool fans did not boo just because they felt like it: in fact, there is a long tradition: according to LiverpoolWorld, 96 Liverpool fans protesting Conservative Party policies in the 1980s and in the 1989 FA Cup semi-final were killed in the 1989 FA Cup semifinal in protest of Conservative Party policies in the 1980s, according to LiverpoolWorld.
Fans began booing the national anthem as a symbol of the Tory (Conservative) government. According to an editorial in The Independent, the booing was also directed at Prince William.
On Twitter, royal fans expressed their frustration. One wrote, "I think Jurgen Klopp is right to publicly apologize to Prince William on behalf of Liverpool fans for his despicable and outrageous behavior during the national anthem."
"I'm sick of people booing Prince William and the national anthem at Wembley, especially after I cleaned out his diary yesterday to present Deborah James with a dame's medal," wrote another (Deborah James is a cancer fighter and our approach to death (She has received widespread public acclaim for the way she rethinks the way we face death.)
Still others commented on the discrepancy between the outrage over the royals being booed and the lack of reaction when soccer fans acted in an overtly racist manner. Radio host Lorraine King wrote, "The outrage over Prince William being booed at the FA Cup final was greater than when the players were subjected to racist chants." She added, "We are seeing people who have been totally silent in the past when it comes to racist name-calling losing their minds over this."
The reaction to the booing was also compared to the treatment of Meghan Markle when she was active royalty. "Booing Prince William is considered 'abuse,'" one user tweeted. "But Meghan Markle must have endured years of relentless racist and bigoted harassment with a smile on her face, UK media, didn't she?"
