Prince George and Princess Charlotte's school lunches are "supervised by a world-class chef."
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and juice boxes, this is different. In addition to a top-notch education, the elementary school that Prince George and Princess Charlotte now attend, Thomas Battersea Prep School, will provide them with meals prepared daily by world-class chefs for a tuition fee of £23,430, according to the Daily Express. The food is a far cry from the British (or American) norm, with dishes such as chickpea curry and coconut cake. [When most Brits think of school lunches, they may think of mashed sandwiches, apples, and juice boxes.
"But contrast that with the extravagant menu served at Thomas' Battersea.
The Cambridge children and their schoolmates, says the Express, "will be treated to food supervised by world-class chefs and the best seasonal produce." The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge do not have to worry about preparing lunches for their children while they are at school."
George enrolled at Thomas' Battersea School in 2017, and Charlotte followed him in 2019 (see photo above for her adorable first school drop-off). The meals served at the school are seasonal, nutritionally balanced, and operate on a "three-week menu cycle that repeats only once during the semester," the Express reports. [They include lamb ragout with whole-grain pasta and Mediterranean couscous with grilled smoked mackerel. A turkey and ham pie is served with steamed broccoli and cauliflower and oven-baked herbed rice, while fish dishes include roasted salmon on a bed of puy lentil beans. Best "vegetarian"! Dishes like curried chickpeas, spinach, and sweet potatoes go well with vegetarian meals.
"Many Britons will have been accustomed to sweet sponge cakes soaked in watery custard in their elementary school lunches," says the Express.
"But Prince George and Princess Charlotte can indulge in a sumptuous steamed cake of jam and coconut sponge with vanilla bean custard. Fresh fruit platters and yogurt, or Portuguese egg tarts, tropical fruit smoothies, and oven-baked oatmeal and raisin cookies with banana milkshakes are available as alternative sweets.
In addition to these lunches, students at Thomas' Battersea school can also enjoy a mid-morning snack of organic milk and water with fresh fruit and pain au résin. Freshly made daily soups and breads are also available at lunchtime.
In light of the above, "Marie Claire" recently reported that the Cambridges are looking for a new school for their children to attend, closer to Windsor. Schools such as Lamoureux in the Berkshires are on the short list, and one can only hope that the proposed school can rival Thomas' Battersea School in the food department.
