Prince Charles "deeply ashamed" of infamous phone call with Camilla

This manuscript looks like something out of a used bookstore romance novel: "I'll fill your tank," "Your greatest achievement is to love me," "I'll do anything for you. That is love. That is the strength of love." [Transcripts of intimate phone calls between Prince Charles and then-Prince Camilla Parker Bowles appeared on the front page for days when both were still married to their respective spouses, Princess Diana and Andrew Parker Bowles. According to Wayne Francis, an expert on the royal family, the Daily Express reports that it was this incident that ultimately destroyed the Parker-Bowles' 20-year marriage, and that Andrew Parker-Bowles and his wife were "publicly shamed" by their wife's infidelity. Howard Hodgson, a royal biographer and acquaintance of the Prince of Wales, said that "the episode still haunts the prince to this day."

"He knows," says Hodgson, "that people who are not sympathetic to him or the monarchy will recall this episode at the coronation and at all other important moments in his life." He is deeply ashamed of the shame he brought upon his mother and deeply sorry for the pain he and Camilla's children have caused."

The "Camillagate" recording was released in early 1993, but according to the Mirror, it was recorded in 1989, when the Prince and Princess of Wales were not yet separated. (To be fair, Princess Diana received her own embarrassing phone call, aka "Squidgygate," and both Prince Charles and Princess Diana gave television interviews the following year to explain their respective positions (Prince Charles with Jonathan Dimbleby in 1994, Princess Diana with the controversial Martin Bashir in 1995). (Shortly after the latter interview, the Queen interceded and asked the couple to formally divorce, which they did in August 1996. A year and three days later, Diana died in a car accident in Paris.

"Prince Charles and Camilla continued their romantic relationship, and despite public resistance, the Duchess gradually became integrated into Prince Charles' public life," the Express reported. They married in 2005, and Camilla was given the title of Duchess of Cornwall."

At the time, it was announced that Camilla would be named Princess Consort upon Charles' accession to the throne. Earlier this year, the Queen said she hoped Camilla would become the consort of Prince Charles. The Queen's latest endorsement of Camilla's stated desire to be called the Queen Consort is the ultimate consummation of the Duchess's public image transformation."

Season 5 of Netflix's The Crown is imminent, which will be released later this year and will take on the turbulent 1990s in the royal family.
