For the first time in 70 years, the Queen does not salute in "Trooping the Colour."
For the first time in her historic 70-year reign, Her Majesty the Queen will not receive a salute at this year's Trooping the Colour, with Prince Charles, Prince William and Princess Anne likely to do so instead, the Mirror reports.
Although the Queen will not salute at the military display at the Horse Guards Parade, the Sunday Telegraph, through the Mirror, reports that the Queen hopes to attend at least part of the ceremony on June 2.
Her Majesty continues to experience what the Imperial Household Agency calls "episodic movement disorders," and her attendance at various events is often left to her own judgment at the time. For example, she did not attend the opening of Parliament on May 10, with Prince Charles and Prince William taking her place, but was well enough to attend the Royal Windsor Horse Show that weekend and a surprise event at London's Paddington Station with her youngest son, Prince Edward.
The handing of the salute "will be seen as another sign that the 96-year-old queen is delegating her duties in her old age," the Mirror reported.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, a possible "Trooping the Colors" scenario would be for the Queen to travel by carriage from Buckingham Palace, briefly inspect the troops, as she does every "Trooping the Colors," and then retreat for the remainder of the ceremony, Charles, William, and Anne would be left on horseback on the parade ground. The Queen will then reappear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the traditional, and especially talked about this year, moment with members of the Royal Family.
In the other plan, the Queen will appear on the balcony only at the end of the ceremony.
"In any case... The Queen will not appear at most of the parade," the Mirror reported.
In the past, the Mirror writes, Her Majesty the Queen "has always attended Horse Guards Parades, either on horseback during the ceremony or, in recent years, sitting on a dais."
Her Majesty's presence at all Platinum Jubilee events is "confirmed only on the day of each event," the magazine reported.
