Princess Diana fed William and Harry pizza and hamburgers in front of the TV on Saturday nights: royal chef
Growing up as royalty, especially when one is heir to the throne, is perhaps the farthest thing from a normal upbringing.
Princess Diana was keenly aware of such realities while raising her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
"It may sound exaggerated, but the way Princess Diana took her children into the next century - she was able to say, 'I know they are royal children, but they are also normal children,'" former royal chef Darren McGrady told Coffee Friend ( (Open in new tab). 'It wasn't like you had to get dressed for dinner or sit at a table and be formally served by a butler.'
In that spirit, the mother and the two boys shared the sweetest Saturday night tradition together.
"When I saw Diana sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday night eating dinner with her sons, everything became normal," says Mac Grady. Nanny always encouraged her sons to eat roast chicken, green and yellow vegetables, and healthy foods, but on Saturday night they could have pizza, burgers, fried chicken, that sort of thing."
"It was a special treat. It was Diana's way of showing the kids, "You're kids, too."
Chef McGrady has a point: Prince William and Kate Middleton also let George, Charlotte, and Louis do childish things. They once fed them hamburgers at a Norfolk pub, and the Duke of Cambridge once took Charlotte to a pizza party. The Duchess also recently bought her two oldest children Mr. Whippy ice cream. Good for her.
