Why Kate Middleton Does Not Inherit Princess Diana's Coveted Wedding Tiara
As the wife of Prince William, Kate Middleton has inherited much of her late mother-in-law Princess Diana's jewelry collection. However, despite marrying Princess Diana's son, there are 1 item that neither Princess Kate nor Duchess Meghan will inherit.
Princess Diana wore a Spencer tiara at her wedding to Prince Charles at the time in 1981/7/29. The Spencer family heirlooms were also worn by both Diana's older sisters, Jane and Sarah, at their respective weddings.
According to reports, Meghan Markle wanted to wear Spencer's tiara at her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018/5/19, but Queen Elizabeth 2 vetoed the decision. Princess Kate also did not wear Princess Diana's tiara when she married Prince William in 2011/4/29.
The Spencer tiara is reportedly worth more than55 billion and was "originally made for Cynthia Spencer, wife of the 7th Earl Spencer," the Sun reported. According to the court jeweler, the tiara was built from "a set of 19th-century diamond ornaments."
After Cynthia's death, the tiara was inherited by Princess Diana's father, son John, the 8th Earl Spencer. When John died in 1992, Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, inherited the heirloom. As a result, the iconic Spencer tiara remains in the family of Princess Diana and is not the property of the British Royal Family.
Explaining the intricate details of the Spencer tiara, Sotheby's wrote, "interspersed with stars and trumpet-shaped flowers, a central heart circle adjacent to a continuous scroll and a rose cut, a cushion and pear-shaped diamond attached in gold and set throughout.""
Princess Diana never owned a Spencer tiara, but she rented a beautiful item for multiple royal occasions, and after the death of court jeweler Diana, the tiara remained the property of her brother Charles Spencer, its owner.
Many publications claim that Princess Charlotte will one day inherit the wedding tiara of her late grandmother. But as the court jeweler explained, Charles Spencer's son, Viscount Alsop, actually inherits the heirloom upon the death of his father.
