Billy Ray Cyrus calls CMAs to Snubbing Beyonce's "Brilliant" album
Billy Ray Cyrus has called on CMAs to snub Beyonce's country album "Cowboy Carter."
The "Achy Breaky Heart" singer posted a heartfelt message on instagram on the day of the awards on May 11. On the 20th, along with a video montage of him and Lil Nath X, he won the 2019 Event of the Year Award for "Old Town Road.""
"Congratulations to all @cma candidates!Cyrus wrote.
"So happy and proud to see country music open their doors and formats to be inclusive to all people, all styles @lilnasx and I received this award at the Event Of The Year in 2019...But they didn't air it on the show, so you wouldn't have seen it.
He continued, "Were you surprised to see @Beyonce not nominated??? Her album was great...Her single dominated. But she knows it. She does not need a trophy from the CMA...Or permission.... Or approval from either of their judges. 'When Ya knock em out.... No Judges needed.
When Beyoncé announced Cowboy Carter in early 2024, she addressed how she played being black when she ventured into country music.
"I am honored to be the first black woman to have the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart," she wrote of her first single, "Texas Hold'em.""It would not have happened without the outflow of support from every one of you. My hope is that in a few years from now, any mention of an artist's race related to releasing a musical genre will become irrelevant.
She said, "The criticism I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to push beyond the limits imposed on me. The second act creates a body of this work as a result of taking my time to challenge myself and bend and blend genres.
Lil Nas X's solo song "Old Town Road" sparked a debate about racism within country music. At the time, Billboard decided to remove the song from the country chart, according to BBC News, because it "didn't accept enough elements of country music today to chart in its current form."
This led fans to accuse Billboard of being racist, and Cyrus jumped on the remix of the song to help Lil Nath・X return to the country charts.
