Cher reveals the "fiasco" that followed when she performed for Princess Margaret in 1965.

Queen Elizabeth's sister, Princess Margaret, was known for her love of art and a preference for luxury (who could forget the photo wearing a tiara in the bathtub). But another iconic figure of the 1960s recently revealed an embarrassing run-off with the Royal family in her new memoir - and I have enough of this story

in her new book Cher: Memoirs, released on May 11. 19, Cher revealed the story behind her private concert with Princess Margaret, a story that ended up being a complete "fiasco."

When the Princess and her husband, Lord Snowdon, were visiting Los Angeles in 1965, they sought special favors from Cher and her then-husband, Sonny Bono. "Having read everything about us in the English press, the Princess invited us to perform at the Hollywood Palladium," the pop legend wrote in an excerpt from her memoir through the people.

But instead of getting excited about playing for the royals, Cher, who was 19 at the time, was suspicious. This was a surprise because the old guards didn't know who we were or thought we were freaks. It boggled how much imagination was not in our audience," she wrote. "The best thing that can happen is for us to survive it.

While the husband/wife duo wanted to turn down the invitation, Cher wrote that they "couldn't say no to Princess Margaret," so they eventually performed

Unfortunately, the event was even worse than Cher had expected. Frank Sinatra, who was scheduled to announce Sonny & Cher, was canceled just before the show and had to perform in the middle of the dance floor because of a lack of stage setup.

"The acoustics were so bad that, coupled with the sound problems, we played badly," she wrote. Speaking of the sound problem, Princess Margaret had laryngitis at the time and, according to Cher, "had a headache, so I asked her to turn it down."

The "Believe" singer added that "the audience must have agreed" about the poor sound quality as very few people applauded.

"I think we were wearing white clothes, but we should have worn camouflage," Cher wrote. "The whole event was a fiasco...I was mortified. We had to stand there and wait for it to finish.

But everything ends well. In 2023, Cher sang her new holiday tune, "DJ Play a Christmas Song," in front of Prince William and Kate Middleton (and Prince Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden) at a Royal Variety performance — and they definitely didn't demand that they turned down the sound. It was a great experience.
