Keira Knightley Revisits the "Trauma" of Being Accused of Having an Eating Disorder

Keira Knightley is open about the intense public scrutiny she faced with regard to her body and weight at the height of her career.

In a recent interview with the Times published on Saturday, Nov. 23, the actress said the almost constant speculation that she had an eating disorder was "traumatic."

"I knew I wasn't [dealing with eating disorders]. I knew I was eating," she told the publication, adding that she mentally blocked a significant portion of that time in her career, "

"There was a complete deletion, and a few things came out and I suddenly have a very physical memory of it, in the end, it's a public shame What do you think?She added. "Given how young I was when it happened, it's obviously part of my psyche. I've been made around it."

Knightley recalled one incident in particular when scrutiny hit a fever pitch after reports surfaced that her colleague actress Mary Kate Olsen had entered an inpatient rehabilitation program to treat an eating disorder.

Instead of meeting with support and praise for addressing and treating problems, the Olsen Twins were ridiculed and ridiculed in the press.

"Viscerally I remember that 1 of Olsen's twins had anorexia and she went into the clinic," Knightley recalled. "I remember being asked about it on a press tour, like it was a joke. She was meant to be ashamed to ask for help with anorexia.

Knightley continued to explain that at the time she thought the coverage was "wild."

"I remember sitting there," Wow, this is wild."Can you imagine?She added that despite reports focusing on other actresses, she was incredibly 'emotional' about the ordeal.

"I can't stand it yet," she added.

In 2018, while appearing on the Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, the actress revealed that she had a "mental breakdown" when she was 22 as a result of her fame and intense coverage in the press.

"I went deep into the treatment and all of it, and the [therapist] said, "It's amazing — I usually come here and there are people who think people are talking about them and they think they're being followed, but it's not really," she recalled at the time. "You're actually the first person it's going to be!"'"
