King Charles was accused of being "too awake" by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson was known for being controversial on a variety of issues during his tenure as British Prime Minister, but now a new book has revealed what politicians really thought about "awakening" King Charles's views on Britain's colonial past.Out in his upcoming book: How Brexit Took Place and the Tories Were Undone, political writer Tim Shipman detailed how Johnson opposed the King in dealing with slavery.
Johnson was in office before Queen Elizabeth died and Charles took the throne, but the Prince of Wales at the time made his thoughts about the 1 government stance very clear. According to the book (via GB News), "Charles described the conservative government's plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda as "appalling."
The Federal Government Summit (CHOGM) was being held in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2022, but according to Shipman, Charles was concerned that Johnson's deportation policy would create unnecessary "tension" at the event.
At the time, Prince Charles "made it clear that he wanted to respond to widespread anger about colonialism unleashed by the Black Lives Matter campaign by acknowledging the evils of slavery.""But this did not work with Johnson.
"Johnson was despairing that even the monarchy was being captured by a awakened ideology, but dull," per Shipman wrote, admitting that the former prime minister had "gone pretty hard" on Charles because he had put his nose on government policy.
As for Royal, Shipman told Johnson, "Maybe, inadvertently, unintentionally, I said something.
During CHOGM2022, Charles said, "I cannot explain the depth of my personal grief over the suffering of so many as to continue to deepen my own understanding of the lasting effects of slavery."
This is not the first revelation about Boris Johnson in recent weeks; according to the politician's memoirs (via the Daily Mail) unleashed, he was "manly" to Prince Harry to persuade him to stay as a senior member of the Royal family.
