Ben Affleck Shares why Jennifer Lopez's movie "Ziggy" Is Not "sitting right" with him
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck met in 2002 when they signed on to appear in the movie "Ziggy." They soon became a couple and got engaged later that year. However, the film, which was released in 2003, was a box-office catastrophe, reportedly grossing only77500 million against a budget of7700 million.
Well, Affleck has opened up about why Gigli is "not sitting with him" in an interview with Deadline. Discussing why Artists Equity, the production company he founded with Matt Damon, is important, Affleck mentioned the famous flop he soon made with his ex-wife.
"Look, I've been in movies like Gigli, and that's a famous example," he explained. "I got a big cash payday for that. Well, it does not feel right in retrospect because they lost money. It was probably not the biggest money-losing movie in history, even though it was the most famous bomb in history."
Explaining why he feels awkward about making money from a project he has lost so much, Affleck continued. But it also does not sit right with people when they go, wait a minute, we all sacrificed to commit to this.
Affleck also discussed the film Unstoppable, produced by his company and star Lopez. "I'm really proud of everything we've done so far," Affleck told the outlet. "The little ones, the air, the Accountant 2, the instigator. Do we love you??"
This is not the first time Affleck has discussed his involvement in Jiggly. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2022, the actor reflected on why the film did not resonate with audiences.
"But in fact, the truth about that movie and what it taught me was how much everything around the movie dictates how people see it," Affleck told the outlet. But for being a movie that's such a famous bomb and disaster, very few people actually watched the movie. By the way, it does not work. It is a kind of horse head in the body of a cow.
Not only does it not necessarily "work" as a cohesive film, Affleck knows that the press attention his romance with lopez received also contributed to its failure.
"And the studio at the time seemed to sell a lot of magazines and generate a lot of enthusiasm because I was starting to have this relationship with Jennifer Lopez, so they latched, as expected, "they want a romantic comedy,"" he explained. "They want two people together. More than that! And it was just like that SNL sketch: "Bad idea."'"
