When Alexa Chung and Madewell first linked for their first collaboration in 14 years, she told me that in the fashion world, if avoidable, the goal was simple: ""I was filling the void in my wardrobe with classic pieces that were really considered working,"" she says, ""perfect denim and cool in pieces and everything.""

The second, the process that resulted in 15 capsules, now available online at Madewell, had several other welcome effects. Having picked the fabric and tweaked the fit, Chung was able to reconnect first with the passion for design he had lost after closing the namesake brand in 2022. "I didn't realize what a joy it was in my life and I had missed it," she says. "Even though owning your own business was hell on earth, the actual action of making and making clothes was not, it was always a pleasure."

Second, Chung realized that, frankly, the happiness he felt behind the scenes would reach shoppers when a lot of people could use it. She spoke to me from her London home the morning after the US in 2024. The election - ended in a way neither of us wanted. In the shadow of a major news moment rendered awake, dressed and feeling better of the challenge than usual, smartly proportioned suits and well-cut Jean-like clothes serve a special purpose. "Everyone likes it and I really hope it makes them feel cool and feel like they're wearing armor in this dog moment," she says.

In the first capsule released in early May, "Armor" looked like an update to Madewell's denim trend-proof jeans, along with a 60s-inspired maxi skirt and plush suede trench. This time we have 4 pieces cut from a lush black corduroy and some silky button-down shirts. In the wardrobe department of Bob Dylan's biopic "A Great Unknown," the rich texture looks like home and aligns just as well with the recently revived indie・chic styling of the mid-2010s.In other words, it was an era when Chung's own vintage-fueled style gained a massive following online.

Her distinctive taste has always struck an exquisite balance between vintage and modern. "Even when I first collaborated with [Madewell] 14 years ago, it's interesting because I was nostalgic for another era like the 60s," she says. "I think now is like the time when I made my first one at Madewell," he says."

Several pieces, including longline corduroy coats and workwear jeans, are updates to items that Chang has sourced through a vintage dealer he met on Instagramm instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrammable instagrams.............instagram............ Another pair of denim comes from the jeans she wears for a long time, she does not even remember where she first found them.

There are also 2 takes on the satin Western shirt, which Chung describes as a "charming and annoying little sister" with a denim button-down from the first drop. "She's a little more, but at night time, she's perfect.""

By getting ready to dress up hundreds of Madewell customers, Chung has come back to dressing himself up, with a belief in his style.

"I think one of the things that makes me very annoying is that I'm always incredibly sure of what I think is right and wrong. But the other day I, oh my God, if I don't know, "I had a wave of self-doubt," she says.

"But fortunately, there are people in Madewell who have a really great taste. "Wait, are these bad ideas?"And they were like, "No, this is perfect.Shoppers who have already left five-star reviews on the lineup before it even goes wide with its launch will probably agree.

This project was a way to design for myself, but it is clear that it will be more broadly connected. Classic fit jeans and a corduroy blazer with a strong shoulder are exactly the pieces that make sense in times like Autumn 2024.When wearing clothes feels like an extra effort, clothes that effortlessly convey strength and calmness are important.

On the eve of the second launch of the collaboration, I flew to Paris for a work trip. I wrapped myself up for the journey in a corduroy coat and work jeans, wrapping 1 of my old sweater as a layer in between. There is a hard deadline to meet at 37,000 feet and what felt like an endless stream of negativity emanating from my news app, but the Madewell design of Alexa Chung dre the right way felt like armor.
