When Alexa Chung and Madewell first linked for their first collaboration in 14 years, she told me that in the fashion world, if avoidable, the goal was simple: ""I was filling the void in my wardrobe with classic pieces that were really considered working,"" she says, ""perfect denim and cool in pieces and everything.""

On the eve of the second launch of the collaboration, I flew to Paris for a work trip. I wrapped myself up for the journey in a corduroy coat and work jeans, wrapping 1 of my old sweater as a layer in between. There is a hard deadline to meet at 37,000 feet and what felt like an endless stream of negativity emanating from my news app, but the Madewell design of Alexa Chung dre the right way felt like armor.
