Selena Gomez Reacts to Body Shamers by Revealing New Health Diagnosis

Selena Gomez is taking on online body-shamers who criticized her appearance at the premiere of “Emilia Perez” at the American French Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Gomez co-stars with Zoë Saldaña in the Spanish-language musical, which is set to debut on Netflix on November 13.

At the film's premiere on October 29, Gomez wore a black dress by Carolina Herrera. She accessorized the dress with black pumps and diamond drop earrings.

After the event, Gomez commented on the TikTok video, which was later deleted, the Daily Mail reported. Commenters criticized Gomez's appearance and pointed out that the singer's pose, in which she occasionally puts her hand on her stomach, might have some special meaning.

“This makes me sick,” the “Only Murder in the Building” star wrote in the comments. 'I have SEBO [SIBO] in my small intestine. I get seizures. I don't care if I don't look like a stick figure. I don't have a body like that. End of story. No, I am not a victim. I'm just a human being.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, SIBO stands for “small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.” This condition means that a person's intestines do not absorb fats, carbohydrates, and proteins efficiently, which can lead to damage in the body; SIBO can also cause weakened bones (osteoporosis), vitamin deficiencies, and kidney stones.

Gomez also suffers from lupus, an autoimmune disease, for which he underwent chemotherapy and a kidney transplant.

Of her role in “Emilia Perez,” Gomez told the BBC, “When I read it and understood it, I was like, ‘How in the world am I going to make this movie?’ I was like, “How in the world am I going to make this movie? But I never doubted him,” she continued, referring to director Jacques Audiard.

Gomez plays Jessi del Monte, the wife of a cartel leader, in the film. “I knew I had to embody this other character,” Gomez explained. 'Everything had to be her. I know it sounds cheesy, but I couldn't be a pop star.”

The “Wolves” singer even overcame her nerves to play the role. She said, “I was very honored, and I knew Jacques [Audiard] was a visionary.
