Former waitress to become Queen of Norway
It's not new for commoners to marry into the royal family (look at you, Kate Middleton), but the story of Norway's future queen, Crown Princess Met Marit, is particularly interesting. In the intensifying drama with her son Marius Borg Høiby, we look back at how this single mother went from waiting for a table wearing a tiara
born Mette Marit Jessem Høiby, a woman who would go on to become Norway's future queen, is an unconventional woman. I had a great background. Her father was a convicted felon and later married an exotic dancer after divorcing Mette Marit's mom, and the princess dated not 1 but 2 felons herself.
1 of them was Mortenborg, the father of her son, Marius, when Mette Marit became engaged to her future husband, her relationship with him caused Scandal Marit, Crown Prince Haakon. She met the prince at a music festival in Norway and announced her engagement in 2000-12.
The current royal family admitted that, according to a pre-wedding interview (via the Associated Press), she frequently held wild parties and raves when she was young, but "she blamed drugs and assured the Norwegians that she was ready for a sober palace life."
Despite her confession, a single mother who was a waitress marrying into the royal family was not well received at the time. In fact, after the royal wedding in 2001, 1 headline from the Independent read: "Norwegian princes marry more brides than commoners.
This article went hard on Mette-Marit and claimed that her "tearful account" remained unchanged "She was completely unfit for her designated role as Queen of Norway" The fact that Haakon and his bride lived together before marriage was considered a no-no in the eyes of the public and the Norwegian Lutheran Church. It was a great experience.
But almost 25 years later, public opinion of the future Norwegian queen has softened. The stylish mother, who welcomed Princess Ingrid Alexandra (another 1 future queen) in 2004 and Prince Sverre Magnus with Prince Haakon in 2005, is dedicated to many charities.3
She supports many organizations in the areas of mental health, social inclusion and entrepreneurship, but according to the Norwegian Royal Family's website, she acts as a backer of the Norwegian Red Cross and is deeply involved in HIV/AIDS-related initiatives.
On her own health, Mette Marit was diagnosed with a serious lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. This state, according to the palace statement, forced her to take a vacation from the royal duties in 2024-10.
She frequently stars with Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, but Marius Borg Hoiby, the eldest son of the Crown Princess, rarely joins his royal family. According to the Norwegian publication Aftenposten, the 27・year-old will be arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in 2024/8 and Mette Marit is likely to be brought in for questioning in the case.
Borg Høiby was recently banned from accessing his mother and stepfather's home after throwing an uncontrollable party that also caused a robbery. Needless to say, the key was taken away.
As the first to line up on the Norwegian throne, Crown Prince Haakon becomes King when his father, King Harald, dies and Queen of Mette Marit.
