Prince William attends the Earthshot Awards ceremony in a vintage blazer found at a vintage store.

The annual Earthshot Prize ceremony for Prince William has always emphasized a sustainable dress code, but this year he took it to the next level by pairing a vintage blazer with sustainably made sneakers.

William, 42, walked the green carpet in Cape Town, South Africa, in a Prince of Wales check gray double-breasted suit jacket. According to several outlets, the royal found the blazer in a vintage store in London.

He carried the sustainable theme with casual white sneakers from Purified, a brand founded by Earthshot Award finalist Mary Allen of Natural Fiber Welding. She said, “He said he has a pair!” Allen told People early Wednesday as she attended an event at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden before the ceremony.

The crown prince added a sweet detail to his look by wearing a beaded friendship bracelet with the word “PAPA” on it that Princess Charlotte had made for him to wear while traveling. [Last year, he wore an emerald green velvet tuxedo jacket and bow tie to the Earthshot awards ceremony in Singapore.

Kate Middleton was unable to join William in South Africa or Singapore, but she stuck to the green dress code (literally) at the 2022 Boston event, wearing a bright lime evening dress borrowed from a fashion website.

Regarding his family's sustainable habits, Prince William told reporters (via People) that “every family tries to do what they can to help the environment.”

As for his children, Prince George (11), Princess Charlotte (9), and Prince Louis (6), the prince said the family “does all the basics, like recycling, minimizing water use, and turning off lights when they leave the house.”

“I think every family has these conversations. We just try to do what we can.”

Not surprisingly, William, who grew up with a famous, environmentally conscious father like King Charles, focuses on turning off the lights, a practice that the King is famous for doing for years. Indeed, William and his brother Prince Harry discuss the topic in the documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70 (via Aberdeen Live).

“He was obsessed with turning off the lights, and now I'm obsessed with it too.

The Duke of Sussex said that things like this “have become a habit, and the small habit changes he is making are something we can all do. And I think that is one of the important lessons he has taught us.”

Prince William said he “now has a severe OCD with light switches . He seems to continue that habit for the sake of his children.
