Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Speak Out Against Internet Violence in New Co-Starring Appearance
Prince Harry and Princess Meghan Markle have emphasized their commitment to online safety in recent months, particularly with the launch of the Parents Network initiative, and on Thursday, November 7, at the Global Ministerial Conference on Violence Against Children in Colombia, the couple spoke on this topic in a joint video message.
The couple stood next to each other in coordinating navy blazers and red poppy pins in honor of Remembrance Day in the UK and Veterans Day in the US, and discussed the changing digital environment and its impact on children and parents.
The Duke of Sussex noted that the first conference for violence against children “comes at an important time,” but noted that “frankly, [the event] is not essential.”
“My husband and I recognize that today's reality is characterized by greater connectivity and advanced technology, which of course has many positives,” the Duchess said. However, there is a great need to figure out “how digital violence against children manifests itself in this day and age.”
The Sussexes elaborated on the Archwell Foundation's work with young people and the online world. Prince Harry said that they created the network because “supporting parents is essential to reducing digital violence against children.”
The Duchess of Sussex then revealed that some of the parents participating in the network, a group of people whose children have died by suicide or been affected by harmful online interactions, will be sharing “their personal stories” during the conference this week. [Young people are seeking help. Families desperately need help. They are asking us to use the resources in this room to help young people face the new realities they are facing,” Prince Harry concluded.
Prince Harry recently visited New York City during UN Climate Week to address the Clinton Global Initiative on online safety. These platforms are designed to create addiction,” Prince Harry said of social media, adding that today's children are ”force-fed content that no child should be exposed to.”
