Why Prince William was cursed by angry protesters in South Africa
Prince William has been in Cape Town, South Africa, this week to promote the annual Earthshot Awards, meeting many fans (including supermodels Heidi Klum and Winnie Harlow), but along with the good-natured cheers, he has encountered some abusive people.
In a video shared by Sky News on November 7, one woman said, “William, go home! You have no sovereignty here, you are not our king. Get out of here!”
Others shouted, “Go home, you are not welcome here,” and some held signs that read, “William, you have no sovereignty in this country” (for the record, there is no “i” in “sovereignty,” but that is neither).
According to Sky News, one local fisherwoman explained that a small group of protesters had expressed their disappointment at being removed from an event held by the Prince of Wales on Thursday, November 7. William met with Avalobi, a finalist for the Earthshot Award for creating sustainable solutions for fisheries, but the group of abusive people felt snubbed.
Maimoena Poggenpohl, whose family runs a fishing business, told “Sky News” that “they were not protesting the prince, they felt excluded from the event.”
“It wasn't inclusive, that's our concern,” she said, adding, “All these boats are maintained by individual fishermen. We could not welcome the prince in the traditional way.”
Another fisherman agreed that the protesters were not “mad” at Prince William, but at being excluded from events at local ports. Prince William did not come to see our fish. No one told us that the prince was coming. Avalovi does not support us. This is our port.”
However, there were many in the crowd who supported the Prince by wearing William, Kate, and Camilla masks and Union Jack-themed jewelry.
One woman, Carol Vice, told Hello! told Hello! We are very proud to have him here. To cause a scene like this is shocking."
The group was also very supportive of the project.
A Cape Town resident who said she was “thrilled” to welcome William to South Africa added, “I think he has enough to worry about.”
On that note, Prince William gave an encouraging update this week on the progress of his wife, Princess Kate's cancer: on November 6, he told reporters (via “People”) that the mother of three is “doing really well,” and that Princess Kate has been “wonderful all year.”
