Prince Harry Says He Understands “the Weight of Losing a Parent” in Touching Letter to Grieving Military Children

Prince Harry, who lost his mother, Princess Diana, at the age of 12, told a group of military children that he “understands perhaps better than anyone the weight of losing a parent at such a young age.”

The Duke of Sussex, global ambassador for Scotty's Little Soldiers, wrote a heartfelt letter to the charity ahead of Remembrance Day 2024. The organization supports children of British servicemen who have died in the line of duty.

Harry wrote about losing a parent at a young age and grieving, “It can be overwhelming and isolating.” However, Harry encouraged the children to embrace the community of Scotties Little Soldiers around them.

The Duke continued. 'But in the heartache of it all, we find strength in the love and memories that remain.' [These include courage, compassion, and a sense of purpose. These will guide you and help you through the challenges ahead,” the Duke of Sussex wrote.

The message rings especially true in the wake of the prince's visit to New York in September to support various causes his late mother had taken to heart.

In a new photo released by Archewell, the Duke is wearing the gold and black striped scarf worn by the Scotty's Little Soldiers community. The photo appears to have been taken around the same time as the recent joint video with the Duchess of Sussex was recorded, as she is wearing the same navy blazer, white shirt, and poppy pin.

In a video message played at the World Ministerial Conference on Violence Against Children in Colombia, the couple spoke about the Archwell Foundation's Parents Network and how it supports families adversely affected by the digital world.

Regarding the letter, Nicky Scott, founder of Scotty's Little Soldiers, praised Harry's role as a global ambassador, noting in a statement that the prince is “totally committed to Scotty's.” Scott went on to say that the Duke of Sussex is in the unique position of having served in the British Army and also experienced “what it is like for members to grow up without parents.”

Queen Camilla has also honored Scotty's Little Soldiers in the past, joining the children of the charity who decorated the tree with an inspiring message during the 2015 Hampton Court Flower Show.

Prince Harry's letter comes ahead of Remembrance Day events this weekend. In addition, Princess Kate will participate in the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday, November 9 and the Remembrance Sunday ceremony on Sunday, November 10.
