Jennifer Lopez styling the 2017 trend of Destroyed Denim with a rare $55,000 Birkin bag.

If you had told me that in 2024 I would be typing the phrase “destroyed denim” into my CMS (Content Management System, for non-media readers), I would not have believed you. It's a defunct fashion phrase I haven't uttered in nearly a decade, and the top denim trend for fall on the runway suggested I would keep it that way. But Jennifer Lopez had other plans.

On Sunday, October 27, the pop star showed up in Beverly Hills for a swanky hotel lunch with friends. She wore a white top, jeans, and a ridiculously rare Hermes Birkin bag. The bag in particular was a caramel-colored crock style that fetched $55,000 on the used market.

While this price tag is breathtaking from the wealthiest among us, Lopez's jeans really struck a chord in my core. She wore a medium blue straight leg, a relic of the mid-2010s, and they were her most unexpected denim choice. [She paired the Dolce & Gabbana jeans with a cropped white top, huge sunglasses, and a pair of Lucite naked sandals, the epitome of J.Lo fashion. [In fact, she wore a nearly identical ensemble again in 2023 with a white button-down and the same ripped denim (this time with the legendary Himalayan Birkin).

Throwback jeans seem to be Jennifer Lopez's favorite these days. Just last week, she resurrected another long-dead trend from the grave: pleated jeans. Also known as balloon jeans, this style was a hipster staple of the 2010s and an important part of tumbler fashion. If anyone can bring this back, it's J.Lo.
