How Princess Kate changed a “staid” royal tradition as she disappeared from public life
Kate Middleton has spent little time in the public spotlight since announcing her cancer diagnosis in March. But despite being behind the scenes, the royal has taken a refreshingly personal approach to staying connected with the public during her cancer treatment.
From posting inspiring cancer updates to sharing her thoughts on Baby Loss Awareness Week, the Princess of Wales has been giving the public an up-close look at her life on social media in recent months. She has added a “C” to her personal posts, just as her husband, Prince William, adds a “W.”
Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond sees this as a positive change, and OK! (via. The Sun) says, “This is an effective and modern way to use her influence and stay in touch even when she is not appearing in person.”
Bond compared the princess's social media tactics to traditional forms of communication from Buckingham Palace. She noted, “By comparison, it seems much more formal now, very formal.”
In September 2024, Princess Kate took this personal approach further, releasing a video showing intimate and candid interactions with Prince William and his children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
The video was used to announce that the princess had completed chemotherapy and offered fans a rare glimpse into her private journey.
Although it was never officially released, in October the Crown Prince and Princess released a photo from their meeting with Liz Hutton, a 16-year-old photography enthusiast battling terminal cancer. After the couple released the photo, the teenager told BBC Radio 4, “It was wonderful to talk to them both.
As Bond noted, “Social media can be a terrible source of abuse, but Princess Catherine and Prince William show that it can be used to spread good will and kindness.”
Prince William often shares his own posts as well, for example, on October 22, he shared X's post celebrating his beloved Aston Villa's recent win.
By posting on social media themselves and sharing vulnerable moments, the Crown Prince and Princess demonstrate a thoughtful balance of tradition and modern communication.
