How a Phone Call Teasing an “Apocalypse” on Halloween 2016 Changed Everything for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be two of the most inquisitive people in the world today, but in 2016, their relationship was a secret to all but a few. But that year's apocalypse-themed Halloween party was a turning point for the pair, who went out for one last night of freedom with Harry's cousin Princess Eugenie and her now husband, Jack Brooksbank.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recount what happened that night in both the Netflix documentary series “Harry & Meghan” and the Duke of Sussex's memoir “Spare,” in which the Sussexes recount that when it came to keeping their relationship above water, they They told us that they knew they were running out of time.

“Before we headed into the Halloween apocalypse, there were hints that another apocalypse might be coming,” Prince Harry penned in his memoir, adding, “More proof that the universe has a wicked sense of humor.”

In the Netflix doc, the Duke said he decided to “pull the pin on a fun grenade” while dressing up for Halloween that year, revealing previously unseen photos of himself, Princess Meghan, Eugenie, and Jack in Mad Max-style dystopian costumes. In fact, Harry's costume was an actual costume from the movie borrowed from his friend Tom Hardy.

“Meg, on the other hand, wore torn black shorts, a camouflage top, and fishnet stockings,” Prince Harry wrote, adding, “I figured if this was the apocalypse, it would bring about the end of the world.”

Since the couple were on borrowed time, the evening was freewheeling, and Harry noted in Spare that his “scary” outfit made him “indistinguishable.”

“I wished I could wear this disguise every day,” he mused in the book.

In their Netflix series, the Duchess of Sussex described the party at Toronto's Soho House as “so wonderful” and “ridiculously fun,” while Harry wrote in Spare that it was “noisy, dark, drunken, and ideal.”

However, their good times came to an abrupt halt the next day, and the Duke wrote in his book that “everything changed forever” after he received word that their relationship was about to be made public in the press.

“Well,” he concluded, “we said, staring anxiously at our cell phones, that it would happen eventually.

Of course, they became engaged the following fall and were married in May 2018 as the world watched, but for the last Halloween, they experienced true anonymity as a couple.
