Prince William Reveals Why Princess Diana Thinks He's “Crazy” in New Documentary
Prince William is no stranger to coming up with lofty ideas. After all, he founded the Earthshot Prize to solve the world's environmental problems. But Prince William's new documentary, Prince William: We Can End Homelessness, tells the story of his plan to end the homelessness crisis in the United Kingdom. It's an initiative that the prince admits may sound a bit crazy, even for his late mother, Princess Diana, a renowned philanthropist.
“She would think I'm crazy,” Prince William revealed in the two-part documentary. And while Prince William said he knows his goals are lofty, it was his mother who came up with the idea.
“A long time ago, my mother told me about homelessness, and I was deeply moved by the connection I felt,” he said in one of his episodes.
The documentary premiered on Disney+ on November 1 and on ITV in the UK on October 30 and 31, and is part of Homewards, a five-year program “aimed at showing that ending homelessness is possible,” according to Disney+. It follows William through the first year.
During the program, Prince William shared rare, never-before-seen photos of his visit with Princess Diana to homelessness charity The Passage, where, as an 11-year-old boy, he was shown a photo of himself visiting homelessness support group The Passage. I was a little nervous about what to expect,” the Prince said.
But he enjoyed the visit with his mother and brother Prince Harry. 'We played chess, we chatted. We played chess and chatted.” It was then that he realized that there were others who did not have the same kind of life as he did."
William said that Princess Diana's work to help the homeless inspired him to want to carry on her mission.
William, a father of three, is now a Royal Patron of Passage, as well as the homeless support charity Centrepoint, and said that he has started teaching his children, Prince George (11), Princess Charlotte (9), and Prince Louis (6), about those less fortunate He said he began teaching them about the disadvantaged.
“When I was very young, my mother started talking about the homeless problem. It's the same thing I talk about now with my children in school,” William said in the documentary, adding that it was ‘important’ to make sure the children ”didn't live in their own little world.”
“Prince William: We Can End Homelessness” will premiere on Friday, November 1 at Disney+ worldwide.
