Norway's Royal Family Drama Intensifies; Crown Princess' Son Expelled from Royal Palace

The British royal family may be famous for its long-standing family feuds, but it looks like the Norwegian royal family is about to give them a shot in 2024. Princess Märta Louise, daughter of King Harald, made many headlines in September when she married a Hollywood shaman and stepped down from her royal duties. However, Princess Märta Louise's brother, Crown Prince Haakon, and his stylish wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit (future King and Queen of Norway), are dealing with both the arrest and robbery of the Crown Princess' son from a previous relationship.

Marius Borg-Hoiby was born in 1997 to Mette-Marit and convicted felon Morten Borg, but the circumstances of Borg-Hoiby's birth caused a scandal when the single mother later became involved with Norway's future king.

Later, Crown Princess Mette-Marit welcomed her daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra (who would one day become queen) and son Prince Sverre Magnus, who became a beloved member of the royal family. Borg Hoiby does not often attend official events with his mother and in-laws, and after his recent legal problems, such opportunities may be even less frequent.

According to the Independent, the 27-year-old was arrested in August on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend and “could be jailed for up to a year on charges of bodily harm and criminal damage.” According to Norway's Aftenposten, he was arrested a second time in September for violating a restraining order, and the Crown Princess has now been summoned for questioning in the case.

However, Borg-Hoiby's troubles continue, and according to Aftenposten, he is currently blocked from entering his mother and stepfather's home. Mette-Marit's son, who lives in another house on the royal couple's private property on the “edge of the forest,” reportedly hosted a party that was attacked by bikers and robbed, according to Se og Hør.

The Norwegian press reported that “valuables of great value to the crown prince's family, both crown and affection” were taken during the party, and a video obtained by the publication showed “people singing and riding around on Segways” in the royal home. Borg Hoiby was also seen “driving erratically and denting cars at the Skaugum residence.”

As for the Crown Princess, who suffers from a serious lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis, she has been undergoing medical treatment amid her son's legal problems. The Imperial Household Agency announced that the Crown Princess would be taking a leave of absence from her royal duties, stating in a statement that “experience to date has shown that the medication may have side effects that affect the Crown Princess's official programs.”
