Australians Go Crazy for King Charles and Queen Camilla Despite Government Ignorance
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are currently on their first tour of Australia since their accession to the throne. Despite a frosty reception by the government, a large number of Australians have given the royal family a warm welcome.
Since Australia is a constitutional monarchy, Prince Charles is the country's king, but with republican sentiment running high ahead of his visit, the situation is... . a bit awkward. Prince Charles was sarcastic with the prime ministers of the Australian states, all six of whom declined invitations to meet with the royal couple. He was also publicly abused by Australian Senator Lydia Thorpe on October 21, and according to the New York Times, Thorpe shouted “You are not my king!” while Charles was addressing Parliament. he shouted.
However, even though some Australian leaders may hold anti-monarchist views, much of the public seems to hold a different opinion of the King and Queen.
Australians waited for hours before sunrise to secure a spot outside the Sydney church where Camilla and Charles greeted fans on October 20, and GB News royal reporter Cameron Walker released footage of the event on X, writing, “Here in North Sydney It is difficult to capture the size of the crowd, but we estimate that there were over 1,000 people braving the heat for a chance to meet the King and Queen in person.”
Crowds of people waving Australian and British flags and colorful handmade signs can be seen in footage of the event.
Also on October 21, a large crowd gathered to greet the King and Queen at the Australian War Memorial, and Matt Wilkinson of The Sun wrote, “More happy crowds... This time in Canberra,” he captioned the video on X. Thousands of people lined both sides of the path the King and Queen walked from the Australian War Memorial to the “For Our Country” memorial.
One Australian is a royal fan and appeared on national television over the weekend to show off his vast collection of memorabilia.
Many Australian leaders have spoken out in defense of the King regarding Prince Charles' refusal to attend Parliament. For example, Senator Ralph Babett said (via the Telegraph), “It is disgusting to show such disrespect to Prince Charles on his visit to Australia despite his ongoing treatment for cancer.” Senator Thorpe has dishonored not only himself and the Australian Parliament, but every man, woman, and child in Australia."
The Senator's ”disgraceful behavior is a disgrace to the Australian Parliament and to the Australian people.
