Meghan Markle opens up about her “beautiful friendship” with her wedding dress designer.
Meghan Markle tied the knot with Prince Harry in a fairytale royal wedding at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018. At the show-stopping event, Meghan wore a stunning boat-neck, long-sleeved, floor-length Givenchy gown designed by Clare Waight Keller.
Wight Keller left Givenchy in 2020, but her relationship with the Duchess of Sussex remained strong during that time. In a new profile of the designer in The New York Times, Meghan shared personal insights into their connection and Wight Keller's abiding love of clothing.
In an email to the magazine, Meghan said she and Wight Keller have a “beautiful friendship.” Of her collaboration with Uniqlo, Meghan wrote, “Her work for the brand has a sense of movement and modern elegance. The Duchess also revealed that she owns some of Waight Keller's Uniqlo designs, including many dresses and trench coats.
Waight Keller spoke to The New York Times about the public reaction to her decision to work with Uniqlo, saying, “Every time I go through my career, I feel like my choices surprise people.”
Earlier this year, Wight Keller spoke about the launch of UNIQLO via Marie Claire and Zoom: “Change is part of my philosophy and philosophy in work and in life. It pushes you, it challenges you, it makes you evolve, it makes you learn."
[10While many were surprised by the designer's decision to leave Givenchy, for Waight Keller it was an inevitable next step. He said, “People who stay in one place end up settling into a routine. I've been with one brand for two years and another for six or seven.”
As a designer, she was also excited about designing clothes for a wider audience. Working for a luxury maison, she said, “you're talking to a much narrower customer base.
“UNIQLO is very democratic, and it's interesting to be able to approach people from all walks of life, from all over the world.
