Queen Elizabeth's former press secretary compares royal family to Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift may be American royalty, but according to a former spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth, the record-breaking pop star shares some characteristics with actual royalty. As King Charles and Queen Camilla conclude their first visit to Australia as king and queen, Ailsa Anderson, who served the late Queen Elizabeth during her last visit to Australia in 2011, shares her memories of Queen Elizabeth's rock star reputation.
“I remember the crowds and the Aussie barbecue in Perth that was the last big event,” Anderson told The Sun. 'It felt like Queen had become Taylor Swift. Honestly, the crowd was hooting and hollering. It was exciting
Call it the Eras Tour: the Royal Edition. Queen Elizabeth visited Australia 16 times during her 70-year reign, and the huge crowds during her other visits (notably the 1954 Commonwealth Tour), including her 2011 visit, definitely had the Swifts roaring.
Despite the growing republican sentiment during Charles and Camilla's current tour, Anderson rejects the notion that Australians want to abandon the monarchy.
“The media always wants to say in Australia, ‘How long are you going to keep the monarchy,’ but you can't come back and be a republic,” she notes. 'The crowds, the purity of the people, I just adore them.'
Despite being heckled by an Australian senator for a speech he gave to Parliament on October 21, Prince Charles had thousands of fans (and some rather dapper alpacas) waiting for hours during his week-long trip for a chance to meet the royal couple.
As with this month's trip, which marked Prince Charles and Queen Camilla's first visit to Australia since their accession to the throne, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's last tour in 2011 had special significance.
As Anderson explains, the couple's last trip to Australia “was a really big boost for the Queen and Prince Philip.” The former royal staffer added, “I don't know how many people would be interested, but obviously they were.”
Charles and Camilla may be bringing their own style of monarchy to Australia, different from Queen Elizabeth's, but they seem to be following in the footsteps of the late Queen (and Taylor) when it comes to drawing crowds.
