How did Ganni's moto boots break through in street style?
When I first saw Ganni's moto boots strutting down the runway at Copenhagen Fashion Week over a year ago, I thought the brand was embracing a fall classic. They weren't the star of the outfit, but a lovable supporting role. But judging by the results of fashion search platform Lyst's Q3 2024 Hot Items Report, I underestimated the day when Gann would one day be the star of the fall boot trend.
Ganni's mid-shaft moto boot has been one of the most popular items of the past three months, behind Jennifer Lawrence's recurring Alaïa ballet shoe and the Puma Speedcat sneaker that is taking New York street style by storm. According to Lyst, demand for the $845 Ganni moto boot is up 296% this quarter.
In a way, it has been a long time coming. The chunky black boot is a mainstay in Ganni's lineup, dating back to 2019, in lug sole and pull-on variants. At the same time, the take-off on the moto version feels particularly intense and current.
Whether guests were dressed avant-preppy in Miu Miu or Loewe or in Balenciaga's head-to-toe, edgy route, biker chic was one of the top Marie Claire editors spotted at Paris Fashion Week It was one of the top boot trends at Paris Fashion Week. The aforementioned luxury designers also introduced mid-shaft boots for going out, but Ganni's struck a chord with shoppers worldwide the most.
“The current popularity of biker boots reflects a broader shift in fashion toward items that blend edgy aesthetics with versatility, with practical styles being worn in unexpected ways,” explains Katie Rubin, Lyst's Vice President of Brand and Communications. “Their practical durability is a key component of the brand's success. Their practical durability resonates with consumers who are looking for investment pieces that can transition between seasons.
At $845 a pair, Ganni's moto boots are relatively more affordable than other runway-centric takes. They are also made from upcycled leather and recycled polyester. Combine that with a silhouette that's easy to put on and take off and soles that can be walked on all day long with more environmentally friendly production, and you have a version of a trend that has received rave reviews on TikTok.
Seeing Ganni's company on this list suggests that something big is happening in the fashion world. Next to it, Coach's viral Brooklyn bag and the aforementioned Puma Speedcats are included, and Clarks' affordable shoes also make the list. While luxury maisons like Miu Miu and Prada still lead at the brand level, shoppers are clearly interested in middle-class fashion that can offer value and style at the same time.
“In Lyst, sales of premium contemporary brands have increased 109% over the past 12 months. Brands capitalizing on this shift are leaning toward hero products that enhance positioning and retain value in both style and status each season.”
Ganni is already looking ahead when it comes to boots: on the Spring 2025 runway, Creative Director Ditte Löfstrup proposed an original silhouette: a lace-up boot with a buckle. This is a Victorian style by Biker Bar, a shoe that fits the fashion of Taylor Swift's tortured poet club days.
If the original Ganni moto boot sells out, rest assured that you will hit the same style mark if you try another of its many pairs, from lug-soled ankle boots to buckled platform boots. Many of the brand's designs are adorned with the same silver hardware and buckles as the viral “hot list” pair. These editions are starting to get attention, too: Lyst confirms that demand for all Ganni boots, regardless of style, is up 94% this quarter.
