Matthew Perry's Mother Suzanne Morrison Reveals He's No Longer “Afraid” of Death

On October 28, 2023, Matthew Perry drowned from an overdose of ketamine. In a new interview with Today's Savannah Guthrie, Perry's mother, Suzanne Morrison, described the last time she saw her son before his death.

“There was a period just before he passed away when, interestingly, he showed me his new home,” explained Suzanne, who is married to Keith Morrison of Dateline. He came up to me and said, 'I love you so much. And I'm very .......' I said, 'I love you so much. It was like a premonition or something.” [I didn't think about it at the time, but I thought, “How long has it been since I've had a conversation like that?” I thought, “I haven't had that conversation in years. How many years has it been?"

Suzanne also said that Perry seemed to have made peace with death before he passed away. She said, “What happened next to Perry was inevitable, and he felt it very strongly. But he said, 'I'm not afraid anymore.' That worried me.”

After his death, the world mourned the loss of the iconic Friends actor, whose talent was immortalized in the hit sitcom.

In December 2023, the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office issued a statement through Today clarifying that “the acute effects of ketamine” were the cause of Perry's death. The statement read, “Mr. Perry's cause of death includes drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder). The cause of death was accidental,” the statement explained.

The investigation resulted in multiple arrests in connection with Perry's death; five people were indicted in August 2024, and U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said (according to the BBC), “These defendants used Mr. Perry's addiction problem to enrich themselves...” He clarified. They knew what they were doing posed a great danger to Mr. Perry, but they did it anyway."

“Prosecutors said Perry's assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, worked with two doctors to provide the actor with more than $50,000 in ketamine weeks before Perry died,” the BBC reported.
