The Great British Bake Off star Prue Leith once ruined Queen Elizabeth's tea order.
When it comes to the perfect cup of tea, everyone has a special taste, especially the British. However, one celebrity found herself in a rather embarrassing predicament when she served tea to Queen Elizabeth.
Prue Leith, who once appeared on The Great British Bake Off, posted an Instagram reel on Tuesday, October 15, sharing a hilarious story about a royal tea mix-up.
“I had to serve tea to the late Queen a few years ago,” Reese began the tale, explaining, “I was catering a building she was opening.” The television personality had “contacted the Palace” prior to that event, trying to find out more about the Queen.
“I figured if I knew her taste in tea, I could make her a nice cup of tea,” Reese said. It would be very wise."
The only problem was that ‘the squire would not tell us’ how Queen Elizabeth drank her tea.“You'd think it was a state secret!” . Rhys exclaimed in “Lille.”
A royal official told her that the queen's tea should be served “on a silver tea tray” containing a teapot with hot water and lemon slices (the latter detail will become important later in this story). He also advised Rhys to ask Queen Elizabeth herself how the tea was to be served.
The Bake Off star continued that “there was a long line of dignitaries,” and she stood at the end with a tray of tea, noting that Queen Elizabeth “must have been stirring up a cup of tea.” She looked around this building for two hours.”
He asked the Queen, “Black or white?” After asking, Queen Elizabeth replied, “Black it is. Queen Elizabeth replied, “Black, please.” As Rhys placed a lemon slice in a teacup and poured hot water over it, the Queen said, “No, thank you for the lemon.”
The reel then cut to an image of a corgi giving a serious sideways glance. Sadly, however, the awkwardness did not stop there.
“I didn't have a second cup,” Reese said, continuing, “I could hardly burst onto the floor. With no other option, the reality star said she placed a lemon slice soaked in tea on a silver tray,
spreading a “big brown stain” on the cloth.
She remained calm and continued pouring more hot water into her cup of tea. The restaurateur explained, “I figured people usually like their tea weak.” But she was wrong again.
“When I got just to the brim of the teacup, she said, ‘I like it strong,’” Reese said of the queen. Oops.
“What she wanted was a strong tea, but she got a weak lemon-flavored tea. 'I haven't felt right since.'
Rhys is not the first to suffer tea humiliation at the hands of Queen Elizabeth. Helen Mirren recalls that when she was invited to an intimate tea with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, and several other guests, she was so star-struck that she did not know how to address the late Duke of Edinburgh and “ended up without milk” rather than call him by the wrong honorific (via People) .
“It's a lesson in shyness, but they were lovely and utterly gracious,” she said.
Fortunately, Queen Elizabeth was not bothered by the incident with Lace. In 2021, the professional baker was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the British Royal Family for her contributions to cooking, broadcasting, and charity.
