Cynthia Erivo Responds to “Offensive” Editing by Fans of “Wicked” Poster: “It Degrades Me”

Cynthia Erivo has slammed “offensive” fan edits of the poster for the movie “Wicked.”

On October 16, the actress reposted on her Instagram Stories an edited fan art of the official movie poster, posted by the account @wickedmexicofans. The edit was a modification of the real poster to look like the Broadway poster for Wicked, with Elphaba's eyes covered when Glinda whispers in her ear.

In the movie poster, Elphaba's eyes, played by Elivo, are looking directly into the camera as Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, whispers in her ear.

Alongside the edit, Erivo wrote, “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I've seen, comparable to that awful AI we're fighting and people posting, 'Is your **** green?

“None of it is funny. None of it is pretty. It degrades me. It degrades us. [The original Broadway poster is an illustration. I am a real person and I choose to look into the muzzle of the camera.

“Our posters are not imitations, they are homages. To edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is something that hurts deeply.”

In the second story, Erivo posted the actual poster of the film along with two green heart emojis, along with the words “Let me put this here to remind and purify your palette.”

The film's director, John M. Chu, reposted the actress' message with the words “@cynthiaerivo is my superhero.”

The movie will be released on November 22, so don't wait much longer. The film also stars Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Grande's boyfriend, Ethan Slater.
