Zendaya bares it all in Cher-inspired vintage naked dress

At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on October 19, Zendaya and image architect Lo Roach were given one task: to show the crowd in Cleveland, Ohio, the best tribute to Cher they had ever seen without singing. They pulled it off in vintage, near-naked dresses.

Zendaya pulled two rare vintage pieces from Bob Mackie's 2001 “Foreign Intrigue” collection that referenced a look Cher first wore on “The Cher Show” in 1975. According to Lo Roach's Instagram Stories, Z first walked the carpet (and backstage) in a white evening coat with an exaggerated lapel belt lined with gold bugle beads and stones. The crisscrossed top, thigh-high slit skirt, and intertwining straps on Zendaya's torso were all she wore.

Roach also confirmed that Zendaya's gown, the finale look from Bob Mackie's original collection presented at New York Fashion Week in February 2001, was hand beaded with diamond, gold, and iridescent bugle beads and stones confirmed. Metallic gold pointed toe pumps were paired with long brown extensions reminiscent of Cher's signature hairstyle. Gone was the “fall manicure of a few days ago,” replaced once again by naked nails.

Since Zendaya doesn't often wear naked dresses, the sheer amount of exposure alone was enough to create a buzz. But make no mistake: this silhouette, like the styling choices Z and Roach made throughout their press tours for Challengers and Dune: Part II, was intentional. Like the styling choices made by Z and Roach throughout the press tours for Challengers and Dune: Part II, this silhouette is intentional.

The styling duo has always had a keen eye for meaningful references, and they delved further into fashion history during Cher's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. First, the crisscrossed straps and glittery torso detailing recall Cher's dress from “I'm a Woman,” a duet with Raquel Willis at the Cher Show in 1975. (The original version was white rather than gold, with metallic detailing at the hem.) Second, Bob Mackie is one of the best-known designers in Cher's vast archive of stage and screen fashion. If Zendaya could wear anyone to do the honor of mentioning Cher's entire career, it would be the label she wore for decades.

After wowing onlookers (and the Internet) with a vintage naked dress, Zendaya wowed the audience with her introductory remarks about Cher. 'Where do I begin? 'There is not a single person in this room, in this country, and in the entire world who does not know who I am here tonight to honor,' she said. 'So one symbolic name for her is enough.'

Fashion lovers know of another person Zendaya might have described.
