Kaia Gerber is Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy's Most Elegant Vintage Couture

Some fashion girls have even displayed Audrey Hepburn's dress from “My Fair Lady” on their mood boards. Others, like Kaia Gerber, can wear precious vintage Givenchy couture that references the wardrobe of eternal style icon Audrey Hepburn's monumental 1964 film.

Kaia Gerber attended the Academy Museum Gala on October 19 (the museum's fundraising event, also known as the “West Coast Met Gala”) in a gown she told “Vogue” was “an homage to Old Hollywood. Alexander McQueen designed this semi-sheer, beaded cap-sleeved dress in 1997, when he was creative director of Givenchy. A reference to a look from more than 30 years earlier: Audrey Hepburn's white ball gown from “My Fair Lady.”

McQueen presented this version for Givenchy in a collection that mixed and reconstructed visuals of women from around the world. This included Hepburn, who frequently wore Givenchy dresses in the form of two gowns inspired by the wardrobe of My Fair Lady. One was a white gown exactly like the one that appeared on screen, and the other was a black gown that Gerber chose for the Academy Museum Gala. (Ironically, the version on the screen is one of Hepburn's most famous pieces, but not Givenchy. It was by Cecil Beaton, who would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for the film)

In a red carpet interview with Vogue magazine, Garber said that Audrey Hepburn has “always” been a major source of style inspiration. As for the Academy Gala gown, she added, “I love that it was a dark, gothic version by Lee McQueen of the very classic ‘My Fair Lady’ dress.”

Garber's 2024 take eschewed the tiny tiara and towering updo styled in both the Hepburn and 1997 Givenchy Couture offshoots. Instead, her hair was parted in the middle and her bangs were gently curled to frame her face. A Givenchy bag and shoes, a diamond De Beers ring, and delicate earrings and choker from RW Fine Jewelry completed the elegant look that blended past and present.

Kaia Gerber's vintage Givenchy couture was also a way to nod to the maison's future. Earlier this year, Givenchy tapped former Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton to head design.

Gerber told Vogue that working with Burton for the Academy Gala felt like “a great way to celebrate Lee and Sarah's time at Givenchy in the late 90s. And for Garber, who is now self-styled, it is also a way to expand her knowledge of fashion.
