Rare Vintage Appeal Common to the Best Red Carpet Looks from the 2024 Academy Museum Gala

Fashion's biggest night, the Met Gala, has a new contender: the Academy Museum Gala on October 19, now in its fourth year as a film museum fundraiser, will be based in Los Angeles.

Like many major red carpets, the 2024 Academy Museum Gala was filled with styling brought straight from the runway: Ayo Edebiri wore a corseted Thom Browne couture dress, Greta Lee and Meg Ryan chose floral dresses from the Loewe rack. But some of the most striking styles of the evening came from stars who were so devoted to the Old Hollywood dress code that they made fashion history by paying homage to the Academy Film Museum's vast film archives. Celebrities began wearing red carpet vintage to pay homage to legendary styles of the past, to rise above the trends of the moment while increasing sustainability, and to use their archival knowledge along with their stylist connections. The best looks of the gala will be presented in the following ways The best look of the gala, a mix of heavy gowns and near-naked dresses, checked all the boxes, falling somewhere between Vanity Fair magazine's Academy Awards party and the first Monday in May.

From Kaia Gerber in vintage Givenchy couture to Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner's Mugler dueling moments, see the best vintage and archival fashion from the Academy Museum Gala.

When you come to see the sisters' red carpet coordination, you'll be in for a vintage fashion treat. Kylie Jenner walked the red carpet at the Academy Museum Gala with Kendall Jenner, wearing a sultry vintage mu-grey gown circa spring 1998. Her stylists, Alexandra and McKennaise Grandquist, pulled off a special feat: they tracked down pieces from the past that fit Jenner's style right here and now. Who else looks as good as Kylie Jenner in a skin-tight, semi-transparent top and a pelvic cut-out, thong-like skirt?

It should be noted that Kendall Jenner did not actually go the archival route--her black gown is courtesy of Schiaparelli's Spring 2024 couture collection. However, the back-to-back cutout styling alongside her sister was too chic to remove.

Wicked Pink took Saturday night off. Ariana Grande and stylist Mimi Cattrell looked back through the Balmain archives, not for method dressing for an upcoming film, but for a collaboration for the Academy Museum Gala. She chose a strapless polka-dot gown from the maison's 1963 collection, with a black ribbon belt at the waist and bow detailing on the bodice. It looked almost identical to the original sketch that Cattrell shared on Instagram Stories, but omitted the white opera gloves worn by the illustrated model. The internet is attempting to redefine “modest,” and Grande is the textbook example of this elegant dress.

Kaia Gerber had a gothic Audrey Hepburn moment on the red carpet, pulling out a vintage Givenchy couture gown from Alexander McQueen's 1997 collection. The gown was one half of a twin set that referenced the embassy ball gown Hepburn wore in 1964's “My Fair Lady” (the other was white, as in the film). On the red carpet, Gerber mentioned the late Hepburn as one of her inspirations. From the beaded cap sleeves to the flowing sheer train, she certainly embodied Hepburn's elegance and grace.

Did the Cargener sisters go on an ultra-luxury vintage shopping spree before the Academy Museum Gala? Kim Kardashian and stylist Dani Levy took a similar tactic to Kylie Jenner, opting for an archival Mugler look from the 1998 Jeu de Paume collection. Her sister's look was a white playsuit with an extremely cinched waist and structural accents at the hips. Over this, she wore a long white coat that slouched back from the shoulders like a luxe cloak.

If Addison Ray were to style an outfit for Taylor Swift's Eras tour, we know which album she would reference. The “Diet Pepsi” singer moved away from Madonna-inspired tutus and corn bras in a dreamy dress by Alberta Ferretti, the designer behind Swift's folklore and Evermore gowns. With the help of stylist Dara Allen, Rae chose a periwinkle plunge halter dress from Ferretti's Spring 2013 runway collection, featuring translucent lace and a subtle ruffle along the skirt.

Rooney Mara's sheer Givenchy couture gown and white hot pants may look simple, but fashion history is sewn into them. This avant-garde gown, with its empire waist and dainty floral embellishment on the bodice and skirt, is from John Galliano's Fall 1996 Couture collection for Givenchy. This 44-look collection is credited with reviving the empire waist silhouette. That's all Mara took from the original styling on the runway: the dress initially appeared with an intricate beaded headdress and embellished white briefs, but the actress only wore it with a slicked-back bun, plain bottoms, and ankle-strap sandal heels styled.

Mindy Kaling and stylist Jenna Filingeri went the minimalist bombshell route on the red carpet for the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, choosing a vintage Versace dress and Effi jewelry. The dress was made of contrasting white fabric with silver embellishments, creating a trompe l'oeil bustier effect over a black sheath silhouette. In this piece, “less is more.”
