Sabrina Carpenter's crop top and plaid skirt look like they came out of Taylor Swift's closet.
The spooky season is when celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo and Jenna Ortega come alive. Their signature edgy style is heightened in October, further accentuating the dark, punkish vibe of their wardrobes. It is not, however, the time for girly-girl stars like Sabrina Carpenter, for example, to shine.
The “Please Please Please Please” singer is known for her ultra-feminine Polly Pocket style, with its heavy use of babydoll designs, including lace jumpsuits and custom crystal-coated lingerie. But she put all that aside for her latest look, venturing into “dark academia” territory befitting Taylor Swift's tortured Poetics Department-era fashion (read: crop tops and plaid skirts).
On October 7, Carpenter showed up in New York wearing a look that was unmistakably fall. Accordion-pleated midi-length skirt and a moody color story of gray and mustard. Leaning more toward the eerie librarian look, she added a pitch-black mock-neck crop top to commercialize the statement piece.
In a stark departure from her usual pastel palette, Carpenter accessorized with even darker details. She wore a shiny oxblood shoulder bag and Gucci archival mules. The brand recently launched a modern iteration of this style, but Carpenter's exact style can easily be found online.
In addition to Carpenter, more and more feminine celebrities are turning mini dresses and corset tops into darker styles. Taylor Swift also showed off her goth style on the VMA red carpet last month. Like Carpenter, she paired a yellow plaid skirt with all-black accessories and her favorite Nars lipstick. (Swift's outfit is from Dior's Cruise 2025 collection.
It seems that fall foliage isn't the only thing that turns color this season...
