Kamala Harris Defends “Very Modern Families” on “Call Her Daddy” Podcast: 'We're Not in the 1950s Anymore'

Vice President Kamala Harris has joined the “Daddy Gang.” Media mogul Alex Cooper welcomed Harris to the latest episode of his podcast “Call Her Daddy” on Sunday, October 6, and in a wide-ranging interview, the Democratic presidential candidate discussed the criticism she has received for not being a biological mother.

“Real children, stepchildren, women with children and women without children: ...... That's kind of a big point of this whole election,” Cooper noted, noting that Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, ”My children humble me. Unfortunately, Kamala Harris has nothing to keep her humble.”

When the podcaster asked how she felt about Vice President Harris, she replied, “Secondly, there are a lot of women who have a lot of love in their lives, have families in their lives, have children in their lives.

The politician is married to Doug Emhoff and is close to two children from his previous marriage, Cole Emhoff, 30, and Ella Emhoff, 25. She told Cooper that she has “two beautiful children” whom she calls “Momala,” although she may not be their biological mother.

“We are a very modern family. My husband's ex-wife is my friend,” she said. Harris also stressed that in 2024, “families come in all shapes and sizes.” [There are families by blood, there are families by love. And I think that's a really happy thing,” the Democratic presidential candidate told ”Call Her Daddy.”

Harris, who described herself as the “child of divorced parents,” also told Cooper that when she began dating her now husband, she was “thoughtful and sensitive” about her bond with her children until she realized it would be a long-term relationship. 'I waited to meet my children,' she said. And they are my children, and I love them to death,” she said, adding, ”More and more, all of us understand that it's not the 1950s anymore. Families come in all shapes and forms, but they are still families.”

Her remarks come after former President Donald Trump's running mate J.D. Vance's remarks about “childless cat ladies” brought children to the forefront of the political conversation this year. Taylor Swift, the queen of cat ladies, formally endorsed Harris in a lengthy Instagram post on September 10 (while sharing a photo of herself with her cat in the process).

Harris called Vance's comments “mean-spirited” in “Call Her Daddy,” adding, “Many Americans want a leader who understands that the measure of their strength is not determined by who they beat.”

As well as being “momala,” Harris also mentioned young women who choose not to have children “because it costs too much money,” as Cooper noted.

The Vice President agreed that it is a “real problem” and shared that “housing is too expensive” and shared ideas that include tax breaks for young parents, including “a $6,000 tax cut for the first year of a child's life.”
