Rare Andy Warhol painting of Princess Diana and Prince Charles could fetch more than $2 million at auction
Andy Warhol created many Pop Art portraits at the time, with brightly colored works representing stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Elvis. Warhol's royal works are perhaps best known for his painting of Queen Elizabeth II, but he also immortalized the young Princess Diana and Prince Charles (now Charles III) in 1982.
The two paintings, now titled “Portrait of Princess Diana” and “Portrait of Prince Charles,” will be auctioned in London on Thursday, October 10.
According to Phillips Auction House, “the striking depictions of the young princess and (then) prince are based on Lord Snowdon's official engagement photograph” and were created one year after the wedding of the then crown prince and princess in 1981.
The Diana painting is estimated to cost between 1.2 and 1.8 million pounds (approximately $1.6 to $2.4 million) and the Charles portrait between 1 and 1.5 million pounds (approximately $1.3 to $1.9 million).
The real Diana wore a very 1980s emerald green gown with puff sleeves and ribbon trimming for her official engagement portrait, photographed by Princess Margaret's former husband, the famous photographer Lord Snowdon. Warhol painted the princess in a more teal hue with a turquoise background to match her colorful blue and red hair.
In the painting (and in the photograph from which it was taken), she wore dazzling diamond chandelier earrings and a matching necklace loaned to the bride-to-be by a Collingwood jewelry store.
While Warhol chose to paint Diana in monochromatic colors, Prince Charles' black military uniform contrasts with the bright blue background and leaps off the canvas.
This is not the first time a Princess Diana-themed auction has brought in millions of dollars; in December 2023, an 80s drop waist black and purple frock worn by the late Princess Diana sold for a record $1.1 million. The auction house announced that the Jack Azagury style was originally estimated at just $100,000.
The pink blouse worn by the royal in the royal engagement portrait also broke records, selling for $381,000 instead of the $80,000 estimate.
With this in mind, who knows how much these Warhol originals will sell for.
