Why Taylor Swift Came Into the Chat About Prince Harry's Security
You may wonder what Taylor Swift and Prince Harry have to do with the ongoing police protection battle in the UK, but the “Cruel Summer” singer has inadvertently caused a stir in British politics over the Duke of Sussex's denied police protection during his Eras tour.
Prince Harry, whose police protection was terminated in 2020 after he resigned as a senior member of the royal family, has fought to have his police protection reinstated during his visit to the UK due to the risk of attacks on himself and his family. However, when Taylor Swift visited London this summer, she received a police escort after she was forced to cancel her Vienna concert due to a terrorist threat.
The Sun claimed that the Mayor of London and the British Home Secretary (along with Taylor's mother, Andrea Swift) “pressured” the Metropolitan Police to arrange a taxpayer-funded escort for the pop star from her hotel to Wembley Stadium. These allegations were denied in a Sky News interview by Lisa Nandy, the UK's Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
Nandy noted that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper could not claim police protection for the VIPs. However, The Sun reported that Andrea Swift “allegedly threatened to cancel her August show without a police escort.” [Shola Moss-Shogbamim, a royal and political commentator, told Newsweek about the matter, “I'm not sure what the police are going to do about it. The same can be said of Prince Harry.”
Its author said he had “no problem” with Taylor Swift receiving police protection, adding that it was “appropriate” since the Vienna attack was foiled. However, Mos-Shogbamim noted that the same should be given to Prince Harry, who “faces the same, if not the same, threat” in terms of threats from the public.
“The threats that Prince Harry and his family are facing, the death threats, and I would call it domestic terrorism, are real.
Prince Harry recently spoke about why he does not feel safe bringing his wife Meghan Markle and their children, Princess Lilibet, 3, and Prince Archie, 5, back to the UK. Whether it's a knife, acid, or whatever, these are things that really worry me.”
The prince noted that the lack of security is “one of the reasons I wouldn't bring my wife back to this country.”
