Selena Gomez Finally Defeats Little Black Dress Regulars in Cherry Red Ball Gown in London

Selena Gomez finally broke the long-running little black dress streak at the Emilia Perez Headline Gala at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11. The dress was a cherry red A-line gown with a scoop neck and a twisted ribbon waist. This bold Oscar de la Renta creation nearly matched the red carpet beneath her, recalling the crimson Prada ball gown she famously wore to the 2016 American Music Awards.

Whether this reference was intentional or not is unclear, but stylist Erin Walsh is clearly on top of current color trends. From Stella McCartney and Ferragamo to Proenza Schouler and Tibi, nearly every designer has incorporated the punchy red trend into their collections in the past year. And now, both celebrities and the public are looking to bring this hyper-fixation for fall/winter 2024.

I must say that it is a relief to see the stars of “Only Murder in the Building” experimenting with color again. Of course, the all-black outfit suited her well, but there are only so many ways to keep repeating the same look on two adjacent press tours. (There was a lot of irony in Gomez's outfits, from the velvet keyhole gown to the mini blazer dress.) Frankly, I was worried about what her frenzy would do to the supply chain ahead of the holiday party season.

For added sparkle, she adorned her stunning gown with a diamond pendant necklace, diamond crawler stud earrings, and two pear-shaped diamond rings.

Gomez has worked with the same Glam team for years, and her latest red carpet look is a testament to their synergy. Hairstylist Nikki Lee pulled her brunette locks into a sleek high ponytail, leaving a few loose waves to frame her face. Makeup artist Han Bango sculpted her crease with orange and brown eyeshadow and applied rose blush to her cheeks, seemingly finishing with a glossy nude pink lip and laminated brows. All the major products appear to be from Rare Beauty, but given the soft matte look of her skin, she probably layered on the brand's latest creation: the True to Myself Tinted Pressed Finishing Powder.

It's truly a glorious day for Selena Gomez to wear color for the first time in months. Readers, we are so back.
