Princess Kate makes a rare appearance in a burgundy suit, a trend for fall 2024

The burgundy trend that will dominate fall 2024 seems inevitable enough to be on Princess Kate's radar. But she has added a special touch to the burgundy hue that has been buzzing through collections from Saint Laurent to Stoudt by going back to the royal archives.

In a photo published on her official Instagram account on Wednesday, October 2, the princess appeared to be re-wearing the Laurent Mouret suit that debuted on her December 2022 trip to Boston. Princess Kate, who is meeting with 16-year-old photographer Liz Hutton in her first royal appearance since completing chemotherapy treatment in September, can be seen in a burgundy single-breasted blazer and coordinating pants. A close-up shot of the royal embracing Hutton also shows off Cassandra Goad's gold earrings.

In another shot, a camel-colored shirt can be seen layered under Princess Kate's blazer. At her side, Prince William wears a navy blue military uniform.

Princess Kate's October 2 engagement was for Hutton and her family. The young photographer is currently undergoing treatment for a desmoplastic small round cell tumor; upon receiving her diagnosis in January, she tackled her photography bucket list. That list included meeting royalty. According to the Daily Mail, it came true when Prince William invited her to a photo shoot at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

The photos give followers of the royal family a special glimpse of the royal family without being seen in public. Princess Kate announced in March that she had been diagnosed with a yet-to-be-disclosed cancer. Until she reported last month that her treatment was complete, she was limited to attending the Trooping the Colour ceremony in June and the Wimbledon men's final in July. On both occasions, she either re-wore pieces from her existing wardrobe or used her favorite designers.

Laurent Mouret, the purported designer of this Wednesday's burgundy suit, is a frequent feature in Princess Kate's wardrobe. In addition to her 2022 visit to Boston, where she is believed to have worn the same set, she has also used the designer for a camel suit (2023 visit to a charity organization) and several evening gowns. According to the style blog What Kate Wore, her burgundy set has also appeared twice in official engagement outfits: in January 2023, the Princess wore the same suit to a reception honoring England's wheelchair rugby world champion team at Hampton Court Palace in Ten months later, in November 2023, she again opted for the same separates at a reception preceding the “Shaping Us” national symposium in London.

Princess Kate's color choices often carry special meaning and symbolism. For example, her purple Safiya dress at Wimbledon was interpreted as a “sign of courage” while she was still undergoing treatment. The theories surrounding her in the burgundy trend have yet to emerge as of press time. Perhaps the bold shade is a reflection of the fact that she is reportedly “amazingly brave and doing very well” after undergoing treatment this year. Nonetheless, it made a strong impression.
