Ben Affleck's friend Kevin Smith was devastated by his divorce from actor Jennifer Lopez, but has not been in touch with him since.

While this statement may sound shocking, Smith's reasons are actually very thoughtful.

In an interview with People, the Clarks star explained that when his wife of 25 years, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, heard about the breakup, she suggested that Affleck contact her, but he said, “That would be very threatening.”

Smith added, “That guy now. . he's going to think, 'Oh my God, it's loose-lipped Kevin Smith.'” And he jokingly called himself, the star of Gone Girl, “the most untrustworthy friend on the planet.” He basically said that if Affleck confided in him, he would inadvertently spread gossip about Bennifer.

Smith has not spoken to Affleck since last year, but says, “I think I'll run into him again.”

“Of course, he's like, 'Oh my God, we need a movie star. Let's call Ben.'”

On the divorce, Smith explained that Affleck is “one of my favorite people on the planet” and that Lopez is “a great guy.”

He commented, “And it hurts my heart and stuff when they don't move forward, but I will always adore him.”

The couple indirectly announced their divorce to the public when Lopez filed for divorce on August 20 after only two years of marriage. Since then, the two have been seen out to lunch with their children and meeting with divorce attorney Laura Wasser in Los Angeles.

Divorce rumors have surrounded Lopez and Affleck since May.

They famously reunited in 2021, 14 years after their initial breakup in 2004.
