Katie Holmes matches her fall quilted jacket with a $35 canvas tote

There was once a time when my closet and “Our Town” star Katie Holmes shared a love of barrel-leg jeans. Now, with fall officially underway, the reigning queen of casual street style has decided that one of my favorite canvas bags is appropriate for her famous New York stroll.

Holmes wore a pair of Rachel Comey jeans and a Marfa Stance quilted jacket over them on Monday, September 23, the second official day of the fall chill. But it was her monogrammed Lands' End tote bag that caught this editor's eye.

Holmes' Monday morning tote bag is familiar to me. Embroidered with my initials or cheeky abbreviations, the canvas tote has been a staple in my wardrobe since high school. I carry a bag like hers to the beach, to the first day of class, and even use it as a laptop tote for work. (Plus, I carry another canvas tote bag everywhere I go as a bag to put on top of my roller carry-on at the airport. I'm not the only professional fashionista who is a fan: Nikki Ogunnaike, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, also has several zip-top versions that she swaps in and out with her work clothes.

Of course, I can understand why Holmes would have such a bag. It's unpretentious and very much her own. It has a New England charm that she shares with her barn jacket, but it can also be paired with a candy Simone Rocha dress or an athleisure gym outfit. Lightweight. Easy to care for. It won't get stale after a few seasons, as many it bags do.

In the past, when Holmes left his downtown apartment, he only carried the more minimalist Madewell bags or the capacious styles of Mansur Gavriel. Those who have always had a canvas tote to their liking know that they can compete with Holmes' old favorites in terms of quality, storage space, and style.

Now that she's discovered the all-around appeal of this preppy staple, what's next?
