Designers' Latest Statement T-Shirt's Powerful Message for the 2024 Election
Carly Cushnie, Diane von Furstenberg, Prabal Gurung, and Fe Noel have vastly different design languages. But ahead of the 2024 presidential election, they are teaming up with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund to share the same message in a wearable form: in a hotly contested race, it is the voters who will decide the future.
Nine designers have created limited-edition T-shirts to remind voters of their influence and are now available through Planned Parenthood. Each T-shirt is united by the message “We Decide. This is a nod to the movement to restore access to abortion rights across America by electing Democratic candidates up and down the ballot in the wake of the Supreme Court's controversial overturning of the “Roe v. Wade” decision in 2022.
The call to restore reproductive freedom applies to Americans of all backgrounds. Designers, including Fernando Garcia of Monse and Oscar de la Renta and Kim Shui of his eponymous label, used their unique perspectives on their T-shirts to emphasize the “We decide” message associated with their identities The overall effect was to emphasize the message “We decide” in reference to each identity. The overall effect is like a handmade protest sign signed by each creator. Queer designer Willie Norris's black-on-white printed T-shirt reminds the reader of the message “Queer and Trans People Decide.” Prabal Gurung's shirt proclaims “Immigrants Decide” in white, red, and black, while Peshawn Bread's T-shirt shouts “Indigenous Decide” in a bubbly pink font inspired by the style of Palfrush Art. [Carly Cushnie made a white T-shirt that read “Black Voters Decide” in a bold printed font. She said, “Black voters know what's at stake in this election and are well aware of the power of the ballot, which they have been denied for so long. We will decide this election.”
Prabal Gurung called the campaign “an inspiring and empowering movement.” He said, “This campaign democratizes the concept of choice and shows what it should be. And it reminds us that we need to work together responsibly to preserve this right,” he said.
The collection also includes a multicolored, illustrated “Women Decide” design T-shirt by Diane von Furstenberg and a hand-drawn “WE Decide” shirt by Kenneth Cole All nine designs are available for $45.
“There are few things more important in this moment than advocating for women and childbearing people to be able to make their own decisions about their personal health and well-being, and supporting the work that Planned Parenthood Action Fund is doing is so essential,” Kenneth Cole EVP Women's Design Emily Cole said.
With so few days left until the election, these shirts are a way to send that important message, no matter who you are or what you wear.
