Michelle Obama on the red carpet in a Versace suit with a safety pin.
Former first lady Michelle Obama arrives on the red carpet in New York City.
On Thursday, during the Clooney Foundation for Justice's 2024 Albee Awards, the best-selling author and former President Barack Obama's better half wore a custom Atelier Versace suit adorned with a set of gold safety pins of various sizes at the collar.
The black suit featured a double-breasted blazer and coordinating wide black pants. While the monochrome attire might be considered simple, as reported by Women's Wear Daily, the elegant suit also featured “sharp silk lapels and soft shoulders.”
According to the Instagram account Check The Tag, the former first lady was styled by Meredith Koop, the architect of Obama's Democratic National Convention (DNC) look.
“Our big girl,” Koop captioned an Instagram post showcasing Obama's Monse look.
On stage at the DNC, Monse's design felt like a future power-pants suit, thanks to the sleeveless cut and crisscross neckline made of notched lapels. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia are the creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, a longtime favorite of President Obama.
During this year's historic DNC, where Vice President Kamala Harris became the first black woman and South Asian to become a Democratic presidential candidate, the former first lady spoke about the future and made her choice of attire more fitting.
“Our destiny is in our hands,” Obama said then. 'In 77 days, we have the power to pull our nation out of the fear, division, and smallness of our past. We have the power to unite hope with action.”
In an earlier interview with Marie Claire, Obama spoke candidly about how she managed the intense media scrutiny and racist attacks she and her family faced as a result of her husband's political career.
“One of the lessons I learned growing up was to always stay true to myself and never be misled by what anyone else says. So when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don't invest energy in them.”
In the same 2008 interview, Obama also discussed her favorite accessories (her husband and two daughters, Malia and Sasha), her love of flats, and her personal style.
“Barack has been in politics for a long time, but my style hasn't really changed since he started running for president. I don't have a stylist, but for special events I work with Maria Pinto, a designer here in Chicago.” Oh, how things have changed.
