What will happen to the 2024 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show?
Five years after executives decided to end Victoria's Secret fashion shows, the brand will return to the runway format in fall 2024. The brand first released a short teaser on Wednesday, May 15, and model Candice Swanepole spread the news by sending an email to the “VS Squad” group chat. The back of her T-shirt proclaims on behalf of the brand, “We are back.”
All eyes will be on the infamous angel-winged lingerie brand, which will hit the runway on October 15. Victoria's Secret closed its official show in 2019 after numerous controversies and outside criticism: executives acted inappropriately, ratings and sales declined, and audiences grew frustrated that a single body type was presented as the “angel” ideal on the runway.
This time, the brand said it “read the comments and listened to you,” suggesting that the show would right past wrongs and set a new (but still glittering) precedent. Let's hope they did the right thing,” one commenter wrote in his initial announcement post. So far, Victoria's Secret has revealed that top models, including Gigi Hadid and Tyra Banks, will return to the runway.
We explain everything we know about the return of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and recount why it was canceled in the first place.
Victoria's Secret announced in late August that the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show will return on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.The two teasers are a more comprehensive lens through which the late 90s and early 2000s high-glam, bombshell noted a resurgence of energy.
Victoria's Secret first released an Instagram reel and press release announcing that the fashion show will return in fall 2024. According to the brand's press materials, the show will “reflect who we are today, plus everything you know and love: glamour, runway, wings, and musical entertainment.”
Past members of the so-called VS Squad range from Gisele Bundchen and Naomi Campbell to sisters Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid. In recent years, Victoria's Secret has also signed Paloma Elsesser, Hailey Bieber, and Precious Lee to its own ad campaigns and, last fall, to a revamped “tour” format.
Victoria's Secret has confirmed that at least two of the big names who walked the runway will return for the 2024 event; in a video shared in late August, Gigi Hadid struts down the Plaza Hotel in New York City and receives a golden VS from Tyra Banks invitation from Tyra Banks. More casting announcements are likely as the show approaches.
On timing: Victoria's Secret's comeback efforts have gained some traction in recent months. Generation Z stars, including Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Rene Rapp, have worn VS custom and archival items at key performances. On the business side, the brand also reported better-than-expected sales for the start of 2024.
In the past, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show has always featured Billboard Hot 100 pop stars and bands performing alongside the runway. The lineup has ranged from a duet by Taylor Swift and Fall Out Boy to solo appearances by Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez; in 2002, even Destiny's Child serenaded the models as they strutted down the runway.
The 2024 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show will bring back the concert-like atmosphere with a special twist: On Tuesday, September 17, Victoria's Secret announced that it will feature its first female musicians on the October runway. But as far as their star power is concerned, the word “accompanying” may not be appropriate.
Music legend Cher was the first musical guest announced, along with two portraits of her in a Victoria's Secret vest. The next day, Victoria's Secret announced that Grammy winner Tyra would also take the stage, and the day after that, they announced that K-pop queen Lisa would also perform, making it three in a row. The label promised that its lineup would “get even more iconic from here.”
Victoria's Secret held an annual fashion show from 1995 to 2018. Each show featured models walking in the brand's lingerie with exaggerated Swarovski crystal embellishments and stately sculptural wings for each set. At its peak, the show attracted millions of viewers in prime-time television slots.
The final show aired in December 2018. Gigi Hadid, Jasmine Tookes, Elsa Hosk, and others appeared on the runway.
Due to a combination of several circumstances, Victoria's Secret decided to cancel its annual fashion show in 2019. The show's ratings had declined significantly in the mid-2000s, along with bra and underwear sales. Victoria's Secret used only skinny, tall models for the show, which also raised the topic of size and body inclusivity, and both industry insiders and viewers wondered why Victoria's Secret did not use models that reflected its own customer base . Critics said the show objectified women rather than empowering them.
The uproar arose after Ed Razek, the brand's former chief marketing officer, made offensive remarks about trans models to readers in a 2018 interview with Vogue magazine. The former executive had previously made disparaging remarks about plus-size models; he stepped down from his position in 2019. Former CEO Les Wexner also left the brand in 2021.
All of this happened against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and the rise of competitors (such as Third Love, Airy, and Parade) that took a more inclusive approach to marketing lingerie. In the years that followed, Victoria's Secret launched a rebranding effort that included expanding its catalog and store models and created the VS Collective, a group of spokespersons intended to revamp the brand image. Soccer player Megan Rapinoe, tennis player Naomi Osaka, and actress Priyanka Chopra were among the Collective's first cohort.
Victoria's Secret attempted to respond to critics last fall with “World Tour,” a film that blends documentary and runway, which was released on Amazon Prime with the opening of New York Fashion Week 2023. The brand partnered with independent designers, creators, and filmmakers to create artistic capsules based on their hometowns, which were modeled on camera by Hailey Bieber, Paloma Elsesser, and Laila Moss. Some viewers compared the show to Rihanna's Savage x Fenty fashion show.
