Halle Berry “has always been miffed” at being the only black woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress.

In 2002, Halle Berry became the first black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. In the 22 years since then, no black woman has won the Academy Award for Best Actress. While giving a wide-ranging interview to Marie Claire magazine, Berry noted that she was the only black actress to win the prestigious honor.

“I'm still perpetually miffed that not a single black woman was selected for the Best Actress Oscar. And it's not because there wasn't anyone deserving,” she explained. The Catwoman star also named Andra Day and Viola Davis as performers who should win in the category in recent years.

Berry, of course, won an Oscar for her performance in 2001's Monster's Ball. While this historic moment was a major milestone in Berry's life, she knows that she has more to do than just win awards; in an interview with Marie Claire magazine, Berry revealed, “You can take the awards or you can take a sharp, strong, soaring career as a black woman.” She revealed.

Movements like #OscarsSoWhite, founded by writer April Lane, have sought to counter the glaring lack of diversity often found in industry awards ceremonies. However, as evidenced by the fact that there has been no black Best Actress winner since Berry won the award in 2002, “change is hard to come by,” the BBC wrote.

In the same interview, Berry discussed her romance with musician Van Hunt. 'It was the first time I'd ever fallen in love before we had sex. 'That had never happened before,' she explained. It was one of those beautiful, life-changing experiences. It was magical.

Since going public with their relationship in 2020, Hunt and Berry have maintained a solid relationship. “It took a little while to work out,” Berry explained. 'But by the nature of what happened, I'm really convinced this is it. This is who I am."
