Halle Berry wears a sculpture instead of a top on the cover of Marie Claire
When a signature item starts to catch on among Hollywood stars, it shows that the designer brand has enduring power. For example, Versace hit the big time in 2022 with its Stac pumps. The year after that, everyone had a Gucci horsebit chain bag. And this year, an unexpected piece of clothing became popular.
Celebrities are clamoring to get their hands on Balmain's designs, which are more like sculptures, more like works of art than fashion. The item is essentially an ivory bouquet, clasped in two ghostly white hands. It is hardly clothing, but the industry's most stylish stars literally can't stop wearing it.
The most recent example of this is by Halle Berry, who starred in Marie Claire's 2024 Changemakers, shot by Jana Jatschuk. Halle, the “Never Let Go” actor, took advantage of the supernatural vibe of the new film and posed on the cover wearing Balmain's three-dimensional top.
Styled by Deborah Afshani, Berry wore a fitted black pencil skirt by LaQuan Smith (store here) and crystal-studded Givenchy ear cuffs. The jewelry had an equally supernatural quality, with flowing, bubbly shapes and a futuristic platinum finish. This extravagant design cost $1,090.
A few months earlier, on March 15, the same top (if you can call it that) was worn by another A-list star, Sydney Sweeney. The actor attended the Los Angeles premiere of the religious horror film Immaculate looking like the world's chicest museum exhibit. Like Berry, the actor was dressed for a ghostly role.
Sweeney's stylist, Molly Dixon, paired the look with black bottoms to further enhance the illusion of “floating in midair.” She also added silver ear cuffs and styled her hair into a greaser-style slick back.
With Fashion Month in full swing, don't be surprised if these elaborate creations make another celebrity appearance at Balmain's show on September 25. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled.
