Kamala Harris Debuts Black Power Suit in First Presidential Debate with Donald Trump
While all of Vice President Kamala Harris' outfits during the campaign were noteworthy, the smartly tailored suit she wore to debate former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 10, was always of special significance. The black power suit with tonal stripes and white pussy-ribbon blouse contrasted visually with the cobalt blue suit and bright red tie worn by her opponent, a smart choice for a candidate trying to make history in multiple ways. Vice President Harris was styled by Leslie Fremmer, who has worked with him since the beginning of the campaign.
Harris accessorized her look with her signature pearl stud earrings, gold bangle bracelet, and several rings. Her hair was styled in sophisticated waves, and her makeup was a nude pink lipstick and brown eyeshadow that added a soft touch to the camera.
Harris has a distinctive look, honed through years of work as a lawyer and politician. Since running for president in July, however, Harris has taken strategic risks with her campaign style. The most obvious change has been the gradual expansion of her color palette, adding brighter and lighter shades like powder blue and lilac to the office-friendly neutrals she typically favors.
With a presidential run in 2024, Harris also seems to be doubling down on her commitment to spotlight labels led by women of color and designers; in August, she was named the new creative director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Democratic National Convention He wore a custom Chloe suit designed by Chemena Kamali, perhaps a tribute to the tan suit worn by Barack Obama at his 2014 press conference. On the fourth night of the convention, Harris eschewed suffrage-era white and wore a second Chloe suit, this time navy, with a coordinating pinstripe blouse, to accept the party's nomination for president.
As of press time, exact details regarding Harris' attire were not available. The Marie Claire team will update this article as information becomes available.
