Chapelle Roan becomes a naked Jeanne d'Arc on the red carpet at the 2024 VMAs.

There was no doubt that Chapel Lawn would sweep the red carpet at the 2024 VMAs with something truly unforgettable. Still, I had no idea how theatrical and avant-garde this pop star would be. Lesson learned!

To mark her first appearance and first performance at the awards, which are also nominated for Best New Artist, Song of the Summer, and Best Trending Video, Chapel Lawn pulled out all the stops... Y/Project's gorgeous brownish-plum Naked dress, chainmail gloves, and an oversized crucifix necklace,

she appeared in full Joan of Arc attire.

She had a leather knight hold her sword and help her pose for pictures. It is not hard to imagine the need for such assistance when carrying a bag of silver dagger claws and small beads. Excessive embellishment extended to Roan's long red hair, which was wrapped in chains and pearls.

Roan was a bit out of sorts on the carpet, saying “Shut up” when the photographer told her how to pose. Dressed for battle, he meant it.

Laurent recently told Rolling Stone magazine that he tends to wear very little color when not on stage or in front of the camera. 'I usually wear gray or black,' she said. But the pop star has earned respect on the festival circuit with her candy, character-driven costumes. The looks she devised for the record-breaking Lollapalooza set cemented her status as a fashion and beauty icon: the first, reminiscent of Pat McGrath's glass doll makeup for Maison Margiela's Spring 2024 runway and Marie Antionette's drag, which featured towering wigs. The other was a Lesslmania beat worthy of Hulk Hogan.

In an interview with Vulture, Roan's beloved stylist, Genesis Webb, said that she and the singer quickly bonded as collaborators.

“When we were dressing her, we immediately said, 'Eh, who cares about labels or politics?

To date, Webb has assisted Lorne with more than 50 elaborate looks.

“This is why I love being a stylist, especially one who doesn't just create full looks from the runway,” she concluded. We start with a theme and we think, 'Okay, how can we make this more campy, bigger?' and then we think about it."
