Sabrina Carpenter in a white vintage dress reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe at the 2024 VMAs
With her record-breaking hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” Sabrina Carpenter is one of the most anticipated attendees at the 2024 VMAs.
Together, her two songs are nominated in four categories: song of the year, best editing, best art direction, and best direction. Carpenter is also nominated for Pop of the Year and Artist of the Year, competing against talent such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, SZA, and Eminem.
Although this is her first time being nominated for a VMA, the pop star has been a hit on the MTV red carpet every year. This year's look, however, stands head and shoulders above the rest (a very difficult feat, if I do say so myself).
Sabrina Carpenter walked the red carpet for MTV VMAS 2024 on September 11 in a white gown with romantic, vintage details. The corset dress, an archival design by Bob Mackie, featured a scalloped sweetheart neckline and embellishments throughout.
She wore a glossy ombre lip for old-school glamour and wore her blonde hair in voluminous curls with a bold side part. The pop star bore a striking resemblance to Marilyn Monroe.
The look felt incredibly similar to Marilyn, but was actually a hand-me-down worn by several style icons. Madonna wore this look to the 1991 Academy Awards, and paired it with a matching white fur stole. Madonna wore this look to the 1991 Academy Awards with a matching white fur stole.
The dress is also in the costume closet archives of The Nanny, which appeared on Fran Drescher in the 1990s show.
This look fits Carpenter's aesthetic perfectly. At last year's awards ceremony, Carpenter exuded the aesthetic of a Victoria's Secret Angel, wearing dazzling lingerie and gorgeous white tulle. Vera Wong's custom design featured a crystal-encrusted bustier with a draped skirt and train.
The year before, she went retro, embracing the 1950s glamour she often embodied; for the 2022 black carpet, Carpenter wore a black column dress with iridescent flowers.
Rabanne's piece was entirely covered in sequins and had several oversized cutouts for added drama. Her hair, meanwhile, was adorned with a black headband and curled into 50s-style waves.
Carpenter's first red carpet appearance was back in 2018, when the then-Disney star made her MTV VMA debut. She chose a one-shoulder gown for the occasion, also in white, styled with patent leather nude pumps and an asymmetrical dress.
If red carpet style counts, Carpenter is a winner in every category.
