Taylor Swift stuns on the red carpet at the 2024 VMAs in a tartan check Dior corset and cape
Taylor Swift drops a bombshell and wears Dior.
Less than 24 hours after officially endorsing Kamala Harris for president and breaking the Internet, Taylor Swift is at the 2024 VMAs, ready to start a new conversation. And maybe, just maybe, she will spark a fan theory of reputation (Taylor's version).
Styled by Joseph Cassell Falconer, Swift wore a plaid tartan check bustier and an open skirt cinched at the waist and swept back like a Highland warrior's cape. The reference is no coincidence: Swift's look is a reference to a runway look from Dior's 2025 Resort collection, presented in Scotland. The Braveheart Codes outfit also included black hot pants, Stuart Weitzman thigh-high boots, and lace-up leather gloves.
Swift's punk princess look was highlighted by a classic blowout and a plaid choker that coordinated with the corset print. She wore her signature red lipstick thinned and black eyeliner pulled.
Swift then changed into a sequined mini-dress adorned with a UFO, the most awarded dress in VMA history.
Fans are sure to have a field day over the significance of Swift's look. So far, the singer, who is nominated for 12 awards tonight, has not commented on her inspiration. (But she has already won two awards, for Song of the Summer and Best Duo.)
All we know is this: this is Swift's latest VMA appearance: in 2023, Swift wore a Versace gown, which she wore to the VMAs in a “Versace gown. It featured a thigh-high slit and gold embellishments that were central to the Maison's design codes.
Taylor Swift has quite a history with the MTV VMAs, both in terms of personal history and fashion: in 2009, she wore a one-shoulder silver gown by Kaufman Franco. That year, she performed “You Belong With Me” on the New York subway and was interrupted by Kanye West while accepting the Video of the Year award for the song. Their onstage encounter set off a pop culture chain of events that we can't even begin to describe in our article about Swift's 2024 VMA look, but all roads led to her 2017 album, Reputation. One of Swift's 12 nominations tonight is for an award honoring her performance on that fateful night 15 years ago.
Swift's VMA style has undergone many changes over the years, from baroque Versace suits (circa “Lover”) to bodycon Herve Leger gowns (circa “Red” #1). Singer has also coordinated his appearances at the VMAs with major announcements and outfits to match.
For example, in 2022, Swift wore an Oscar de la Renta mini that appeared to be assembled with a bunch of diamonds. Fans mistakenly interpreted the dress as an Easter egg from “Reputation (Taylor's Version)” due to its resemblance to a scene in her “Look What You Made Me Do” music video in which Swift bathes in a tub filled with diamonds The dress was also used in the “Reputation (Taylor's Version)” music video. The dress was a reference to Swift's upcoming Midnights anthem “Bejeweled,” from the album she will present on stage during her acceptance speech.
Leading up to the 2024 VMAs, Taylor Swift wore a mix of Vivienne Westwood plaid and corsets, all of which echoed the silhouette of tonight's red carpet look. But her 2024 VMA look, whatever that means, is arguably her most memorable to date.
